Ignition timing.........
This is for the gearhead mechanics out there. I believe my timing is a little slow, and I want to advance it but am not sure how much. I know a lot of dedicated gearheads can pretty much tune their motor by ear, but not me. Can I get a couple of recomendations on what to advance it to? My 350 is basically freshened up with a Holley Contender aluminum intake, Edelbrock 1406 Carb and an HEI ignition with vacumn advance. I'm looking to get the optimum advance I can without making the motor detonate. How much is that (guestimating of course!)?

10 Degrees BTDC...
Works for me. I have an Edelbrock Performer, with a 1901 Edelbrock Q-Jet, headers, RV cam and dual Flowmaster 40's running 2.5-inch pipes from the collectors through the mufflers and out. Since I'm apparently running 3.07 gears, it does okay, but doesn't tend to "lite 'em up" on take-off unless prodded fairly aggressively. No run-on, no pinging. Burning regular grade gas.
