Re: Dual alternators setup?

you can switch to serp setup from 88-94 trucks, and then switch the a/c bracket with the alt bracket for a 4.3 v6 and have 2 alts that way. no a/c then though.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Why do you need two alternators? You can buy a large output alternator.

Convert over to an LS engine setup. You can then add a second alternator.

For plowing. Its a helluva alot cheaper than going the LS route if I can go the 88-94 route. I dont have air so no biggie.

My 87 V30 plow truck is a TBI 350 truck, single alternator, dual batteries. I run a Boss Power V with no problems.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Yea but you got multi rib belt which is fine. I cant run much over 100a with a v belt that I currently have. I want no less than 200 amps and Im not spending $350+ on a single alternator when I can get dual alts for less than that with all brackets and components.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Yep. Waiting on some guy to sell and hopefully going to pick up all parts this weekend and hoping to get done next week. I'll take pics.

Jay yours would be easy to do. Get A/C bracket and put alternator in there.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

If you would ever want to convert to A/C, or for those that already have it, the serpentine brackets off of the late 80's-early 90's V8 TBI GM trucks would probably work. The pass. side has a spot for a smog/AIR pump that could be used for an alternator with little work. I am not sure of the possible savings, but you could always buy an alt rebuild kit, with the high amp goodies and convert yours. Personally, I have a Summit one wire 100 amp ($83), on a V belt, and I get 14.7 volts, even with all four headlights and a JL 600 watt amp at full blast. If you haven't already, I would replace the battery cables with 4 gauge cables, and run one directly from the alt to the batt. Basically, do the big 3, which is actually 6 wires (+batt to alt, alt to starter, starter to batt/ -batt to chassis, chassis to eng, eng to batt) and then run 4 ga. to your plow set-up from the battery.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Heres how Im doing mine.....

Brackets, pulleys, fan, new water pump, and p/s from a 89-95 SBC or 4.3L. I havent figured how Im doing the second alternator just yet. I can either fab up a tiny mount and weld it to the A/C bracket of the setup Im getting or I can get a Astro van alt bracket and bolt it in since they were on the left side.

Wiring will be as follows:

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Looks good. Depending on how many amps the plow's pump draws, I think 2 ga. might be overkill, but it's always better to go bigger...just not on the pocketbook. I don't think you need to use 2 ga for the starter, especially if you have a newer PMGR unit. Also, I would add fuses between the batt. and plow and batt. to cab. Finally, I would not connect the two batteries, unless you plan on using an isolator. Good luck.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

Well the plow motor itself pulls over 180 amps so one alternator is not even close to efficient. I wouldnt think I would need fuses between anything after the alternator since the power is coming from those first and would therefore blow first.

Im running 2 ga just cause I like to do things overkill. Anytime Im not plowing Im not making money. Anytime Im down while playing in the woods/mudding then Im not having fun. I love making money and having fun

Re: Dual alternators setup?

If I might make a suggestion, imo it would be better to create an alternator junction connection and a ground junction and connect the positive and negative cables respectively I would also take advantage of the alternators remote sense feature (don't know what alt your using) and connect it at the alt junction for peak efficiency. That would be a more modern system below are diagrams from an 06 with dual alts and thats how its connected also I doctored up your diagram just to illustrate my point. 06 ref diagram can be found here page 222 or D-150 >>> http://www.gmupfitter.com/publicat/2..._MD_C_Elec.pdf

Edit>>> Also wherever you decide to put the ground junction the engine should also be grounded to that point.

Re: Dual alternators setup?

I got a new/rebuilt 180 amp 22SI Delco truck alternator on ebay for less than $90. All you would need to run that is dual V belts. It's not like a stock size alternator rewound to put out more amps, it's just bigger - therefore runs cooler, and puts out more amps when hot. It would be more than enough for a plow...

You can set my truck on fire and roll it down a hill,
and I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe de Ville.
