Changing 1/2 ton 2wd to 1 ton 4X4

How hard would it be to change a 68 1/2 ton 2WD to a 3/4 or 1 ton 4X4??? Anyone know? Has anyone done the change before?

If you could get the whole frame and running gear it would pretty easy... or are you looking to put the 4wd suspension set up under the 1/2 ton 2wd frame?

I was hoping to use the original frame because it is a 50th 68! I really want to use as much of the 68 as I can!

The General never made a 1-ton 4x4 in the 67-72 body style.

What I would do is get a 71 or 72 3/4 ton frame and put your 68 body on it.

71 or 72 gets you disk brakes and commonality through 1987. You could then get a newer (through 87) 1-ton front and rear and swap them in for a 1-ton.

Here is mine. It has the Dana 44 from a 72 K5 and the 14 bolt rear from a 73 one ton. I went with a t400, 208 transfer and a gear vendor OD. It has one ton drive shafts with CV joints by High Angle Driveline The frame is the original 69 1/2 ton 4x4 which I beefed up in key spots The cab came from a 69 CST. The truck took a year and a half to build in honer of my wife who always called it the million dollar truck.

Sadly I did not have a digital camera at the time so most of my pictures are in a album. I need to get them put on a CD. There are a few in my profile.

OK, so if I found the 4X4 suspension for a 3/4 ton truck, would it bolt directly to the 1/2 ton 2wd frame???

Yes the springs will mount to the frame in the original brackets

OK, Decided to go a different route for this build and go with 3/4 or 1 ton 2WD...but, same question applies...

Anyone know what the differences are in the suspension setup as far as how it is bolted to the frame? Could I take the suspension off of a 3/4 or 1 ton truck and bolt it directly to a 1/2 ton frame?

is your 2wd truck a coil spring rear or a leaf spring rear?
