Vortech SC or BBC?
Ok. So I'm not as serious as most of you guys on this side but I thought I'd ask this one here.
As a project for the future I'd like the 64 to put out more power (and go faster). What I've been looking at is a BBC (454 ish) or a Vortech super charger on my mild small block 350. Now I know I could do the whole 383 thing but that seems kinda boring for the money I'd throw at it. I'm not looking for an 11 but I'd like to get it out of the 15's haha. The 15 was with a 3.73 open carrier, 26'' tire, a TKO-500 and the mild 350 small block. I couldn't really launch the truck because, well, it would just spin. So I took it easy. The corrective action has been the LSD that I just bought. So what makes more sense.. 454 or under hood supercharger. This truck is my daily driver and need it to get some gas mileage / street manners. Thanks! Alex |

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
IMO, it depends on what you have for a "mild" 350 and how much boost we're talking about. If you want to throw more than mediocre boost at it, you really should build the motor to handle it. Cast internals and tight ring gaps usually don't play well (for very long) with forced induction. So if you'd need to upgrade the 350 to handle boost first, then the 454 might be a better option for you......'cept for the gas mileage of course. Just my $.02

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
SWB 85.. ya that's kind of what I thought. I'm kind of unfamiliar with boost applications. I know forged internals are always better for more power. I'm kind of leaning to the 454 .. But the trouble is finding one around here in a rebuild able state.
Hart_Rod - 383 and the vortech supercharger?! Nice. I have this feeling you live up the street from me. Any big blocks up there? Know of anywhere to look by chance? Alex |

Vortech or Turbo... but you're going to have to build the motor... and get a blow through carb.

I'm not to far from you.....Let me know if you're ever over this way. I don't have any leads on big blocks. Keep an eye on Craigslist, I see a few pop up there every once in a while.

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
BBC would likely be easier choice, I love mine, who needs MPG's . I want to beef it up one day for it's own blower.

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
Heart Rod - will do.
I am kind of wondering what someone would get for MPG with a 5-speed and 3.73's with a bbc. I have no clue myself. I get 16 mpg highway now in the truck. |

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
By the time you rebuild your SBC to handle the power, you will be in BBC territory. I can not argue against the BBC as i have not really laid into mine hard yet and it already is nasty. Plus, when someone says, "Is that a Big Block." you can not help but . Usually when someone ask the other question, "What you got in it?" the response is, "JUST a small block."

Re: Vortech SC or BBC?
just picked up a late 80's 454 in a donor truck while looking for parts to put disks on my '70 C30, will now replace the 350 w/da 454. My first big block.
