Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic?
Just a random idea I had lastnight while tearing apart my 51...
I was thinking of keeping the 3 on a tree shift lever, and connecting it to the auto. Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic? I figured a couple ways to do it. first was a simple cable to one of the arms.. and lockout the "pull towards you".. then i got a second idea of using both arms, but have the shift pattern be: shifter towards you all up is in park, drop once is R, drop again its in N and it falls forward (the old N as well).. then continue down for OD, D, 2, 1 anyone ever attempt something like this before? i know its alot of work for nothing, but something about the old column with the small rod shifter on top appeals to me.. so simple and functional looking... id like to keep it. even though im running a modern automatic drivetrain. |

Re: Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic?
I tried it on my 63 GMC with a rod (not a cable). It was binding a bit from time to time and it did not lock into park like the auto colums are designed to do. I finally swapped a 67-72 automatic column in it's place One of our members had it for sale here. It bolted right up, looks good and works like it should. Something to think about

if i do it, i would need a roller detent for park... a ball bearing, spring and a hole would work... but i have to remember to include it... actually.. if im going to do that, i might as well mark and notch each gear as well... instead of relying on the auto trans. hmmm.. going to have to draw out and design this and see how feasible it really is... for a cable, i was thinking about using a B&M aftermarket, so i dont anticipate any binding.. if i cant do a straight shot, i can always run it long and loop around and back in arc.. alot of aftermarket shifters require that anyway. Re: Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic?
I had a 58 GMC that the previous owner left the three speed ****er in when he switched to a Chysler big block and automatic. It worked fine. He did add a hose clamp just below the arm to keep it from up and down. I had a 56 Chevy with hydramatic and trans was bad so I put a late model trans. I did have a problem going from P to D1, but not with the 3 speed shifter in the 58.
