axles???

Alright guys I'm rebuilding a 65 stepside swb. As far as I know they are 12 bolt rear ends and mine appears to be that. I have an open carrier and I wanted posi since the winters in Nebraska can get nasty. 4x4 planned for later. Anyway I ordered the richmond Lockright system since money is sort of an issue. Jegs only had one listing for a 65 and it didn't offer an axle spline count so I assumed there was only one spline option (should have known better) I pulled my axles and they are 17 spline and the richmond setup is for 28 or 30(just guessing havent counted yet) Is my truck a freak or am I going to have to order new axles? Thanks for any help. I would also like to hear from anyone who has used this setup. Thanks.

Re: axles???

I think 65 is when the 'switch' occurred from 17-spline to 30-spline. You'll need to look for axles from a 66-69 for 6-lug/same length or purchase new aftermarket units.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: axles???

I got my Eaton posi and axles from Randy's Ring and Pinion. The price was good as is the quality. I believe I have 30 or 32 spline now. He should be able to get you hooked up for a decent price, if you can't find any used ones.--Jeff

for your own best interest I would pull them to id what I actually had, who knows if the axle had been swapped out at one time in its life.

Re: axles???

Link to similar thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=423085

According to Hollander Interchange the change occurred from 17 spline to 30 spline in 1965.
1963 & 64 shared the same 17 spline,30 1/4" axles, GM part #3819048 L or R.
1965 to 69 C10 12 bolt along with a few P10, Carryall and Suburban shared the same axles, 30 spline, 30 1/4" long, GM part # 3893605 L or R .

No expert, just saying what's in the book!

Re: axles???

Ok SCOTI was right all my 66 has the 30 spline axles..... now the bad news. The bolt that holds the big pin in that keeps the spider gears together is broken in 3 pieces and I can only get two out. I was told that the pin is brittle and a cold chissel and a swing for the fences would break it so far my arm and the 2lb hammer are out of gas, I have broke 2 cold chisels and my air hammer made no dent either. Does anyone have experience in these matters?

I doubt you can 'break' the pin that holds the spider gears w/just a hammer/ chisel. You need to try & get the end of that bolt out as it seats in the pin.

Re: axles???

Whoever told you that pin would break must have been smoking something.

Now that you've likely damaged the surface of the pin, trying to break it, you'll probably not be able to slide it out even if you do get the rest of the retaining bolt out. At this point you might just have to cut the pin out between the spider gears with either a torch or a plasma cutter. But of course, you'll have to be extremely careful not to damage the ends of those axles.

Re: axles???

You were all correct. That pin is the toughest mother I have ever ran into on any automotive project and I've rebuilt a few. Normally I just swap the entire rear end and never dig into one. I did finally manage to break the pin and remove my axles. Now I'm finally ready to install the Lock-right. Thanks for all the help.

Re: axles???

It's a little late now, but we just went through this same problem in another thread. Anyone else who runs into it might like to know that there is a less destructive fix available.
