How to measure correct shock length

I am at the point where I need to select rear shocks on my 57 3100 but am not sure how to measure for correct length and have no old shocks to compare to. It is currently on axle stands but can be set on the wheels. Sitting on the stands it is 20" from bolt to bolt where they mount.
