Question SM465 Question

I pulled the shifter out of my sm465 to install the cab after it was painted. After I reinstalled the shifter, it will not go into any gear, clutch in or out transfer case in gear or out. My question is this: Could the trans be stuck between gears or not in neutral when I install the shifter? If this is the case, what do I need to do? Pull top cover and align or can I do this through the shifter tower hole? If the truck were not so original this would have been solved by an automatic but I was stubburn and left it as it came. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Harold

Re: SM465 Question

You might not have had it on nuetral when you pulled the shifter out - I think you will have to pull the top cover to align everything again, but hopefully someone will chime in that knows for sure.

Re: SM465 Question

465 in my truck refused all gears about three blocks from where I bought the truck. Being totally unfamiliar with the trans and seeing no linkage to deal with, frustrated, I bumped the shifter three times to the left and it took all gears after that. Later, finding out that the trans does not like to be taken out of gear quickly, I tried that again and it worked. I'm sure this is not the high tech solution you were looking for, but... Good luck. I hope your fix is an easy one.

Re: SM465 Question

When putting the cover on one of these you must shift the trans cover half way into reverse. Then you have to move the reverrrrrse sliding gear so you can see the groove down in the recess. It will have a tendency to slide away before you can get the cover on so you need to have the trans level or if you don't have grease in it yet you can put a little wheel brg grease around it to keep it from sliding. The cover should go on then.

Re: SM465 Question

Sorry I misread your post. If you just removed the shift lever it is not nessesary to remove the cover. Take a big screwdriver & a light & look down the hole. Take the screwdriver & move the shafts till the openings line up. The reverse will have a nogen in the middle. Set the lever down in the opening & sinch down the coller.
