68 axel 78 shafts

so what is the downside to using78 5x5 axels in a 68 housing of in not using the drums

The 78 axles are longer which puts the bearing surface outside of the rollers and the stickout will affect the brake shoe contact.

I was going to do a disc brake conversion on it so besides the brakes is there enough bearing contact on the axels?

the axle shafts are too long. This puts a surface that is not supposed to ride on the bearings... and puts it on the bearings.
Most don't snap, but the possibility is there.
