Double Hump Crossmember Help ~ I confused. - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was at a boneyard today and was looking for the double hump....

however... I don't know what the hell I'm looking for.

Basically I have a few different options.

One: Crossmember with no lateral bars.
Two: Crossmember with lateral bars.

Now... even the crossmembers that have the lateral bars are different... some have a lot of holes, some only have a few.

Some have 2 mounts and some have 1...

the one I had them set aside for me later measures 33.5 tip to tip at the laterals, and 33 even tip to tip on the main crossmember piece, and 5.5" from bottom of crossmember to the highest point of the lateral bar...

I've got a 350/TH350 2WD ...

what exactly am I looking for to do this??

Welcome to my nightmare..... I went through 3-4 double humps until I found one that worked for me. The most important thing for me was that the transmission stayed the same height. There are a few crossembers that will raise it 1-2 inches higher and that's no good. I also wanted to use the braces on both sides to keep the frame stiff. One thing's for sure, you'll know how to get a crossmember in and out in record time by the time you find the right one.

well... at the moment, i don't know what to do...
I would like to have the laterals on there, but I'm not running a lot of power or anything...

there are single mount and double mount crossmembers... then there are 4wd and 2wd ...

I am so confused

stick with a 2wd. what exactly are these "laterals" that you're talking about?

I don't know which is which for the 2WD or not... thats my whole problem...

the laterals i'm talking about are the two support pieces that come off and arch upwards off the main crossmember to keep the frame from twisting n whatnot, added support

I pulled thi crossmember off of a 2wd suburban in a junk yard. Tom currently has my crossmemeber, but he is supposed to be giving it back soon

I dont know if I want to give this away or sell it now. Im planning a tranny swap, someday. I may need this. But if you contact the guy in the link he should be able to get you some of those extra braces. I dont remember the sub. having the braces, but I know what your talking about. I believe the crossmember was just bolted onto the frame without any additional bracing.

I'm not really worried about the braces if they're not that important...

but any idea if I have the double mount or single mount currently? I've yet to check and can't really do much about it at the moment...

I disagree, the braces are there for a reason. If you ever decide to put a radical motor in your truck you will want the frame to be as stiff as poss. Just my opinion

Never said anything about not needing the braces, what I said was the vehicle which I pulled that crossmember off did not have the braces. I would also like to add, that it didnt look like it ever had them either. But if it were me, I would add them, atleast on one side.

I am sure you are addressing the braces when you say "laterals"

I ran mine without them (PITA to put back in under the truck) for about 5 years with a 454 and 4 speed that I wasn't featherfoot with. It is there to make the chassis laterally stiffer, and I put them back in as you can tell in the pic. Typically you can look under a 73-75 and 1/2T with any engine config and it will have one.

Great pic! I used a lift and a tranny jack and had no problems. If your on your back in the driveway-->forget it!

It isn't that hard to put back in if you don't have exhaust running in the way, but it is still a PITA.

man sometimes i wonder why in the hell I ever buy chevy's because they involve so much work to get what I want done...

Then I remind myself... its way easier than working on import trucks or a ford or dodge ... LMAO....

Would I be safe for awhile to not use the lateral support bars if I just want to get it done quick and easy and keep the lateral supports for later when I do need to replace some body parts? cause in all honesty one of these days in the future I'll have to replace the cab and fenders anyway

in your honest opinion guys, would I be safe? I'm running nothing more than a mild 350 and i don't drive all that hard too often...

If you ever decide to put a radical motor in your truck you will want the frame to be as stiff as poss.
