Subwoofers???

Ok so I have an '83 swb single cab. I don't know anything about car audio. I've got a nice deck, speakers and 500w amp. I also have a 1200w amp to use. I want some bass, but I have no idea what type of sub/box combo I need. Its going to have to be shallow enough to fit behind the seat, and I'd like to stick with my 1200watt amp. I want a substantial amount of bass, enough to "bump" as some would say, but nothing over the top or extravagant.

I want clean, powerful bass as simply and cheaply as possible.

So, will I be able to do this with my 1200 watt Sony Xplod amp?

What type of sub should I get and how many? (diameter, wattage, etc.)

And what type of box should I put it in? Ported/non ported?

thats 1200w into what 4/2/1 ohm?
into a 4 ohm load and clean power is alot less..
but non the less..
a sealed box will be a tighter bass
a ported box will boom more
a band pass is all boom and a very big box..
if you're only in it for the boom
I'd get a 12" and build a ported box..
will that sony explode run bridged in mono??
if not either get 2 subs or one dual voice coil sub..
I doubt you'll be happy with that sony amp, running a sub..

Thanks for the info. I'll check my xplod once I get back in town from Thanksgiving and answer your questions. I DO want boom but I don't want trashy, nasty boom. I want clean boom.

amps jl audio or rockfordfosgate
there are others, but this take a beating
I'd stay with you amp for now, build a box (ported) the bigger the air space the lower the bass goes, if you like double bass drums, then 2 subs and a 2 channel amp.
if it doesn't matter, then a mono amp or a 2 channel in bridged mode.
good subs are not cheap.. but what you want you can get a pioneer/etc and it'll do..
I run jl's in a sealed box with a 1000w jl mono block.. thats real 1000w clean into a 4 ohm load. it's overkill..
my rockford 500 w 2 channel was more than enough.
in a truck the cab is small you don't need much. so that sony might be ok..
but running it as a sub amp it might overheat and shut down ,(to save it self)
subs use a lot of current.. good luck..
once you hear a sealed box, you'll never want a ported one again.. only down side is a seal box needs almost twice the power to be as loud as the ported one..
but it's so tight and not muddy

What kind of music do you listen to? And how much are you looking for and what's the budget? Car toys normaly has jbl 12 in and 10s on sale buy one get one free I have the 12s and there alot of bass but I like that if you don't want to go over kill I would stick with 10s or even 8s would give you nice clean crisp notes my 12s are very crisp for 12s but nothing like a good jl 8 or a 8in kicker solarbaric just my .02 but if you could tell me the budget the amount of bass and what kind of music u listen to I could make a really good suggestion ( and a little more detail about your amp)

I listen to alot of different music, but mainly rap so I want the bass for that. I want it to bump. I'll spend probably $150-$200 MAX on subs, and I plan on building my own box. For the amp, its a 1200w sony xplod my friend gave to me so once I'm back home monday I'll get you the details on it.

this will give you ideas

ohms is the way they rate amps...
your explod is rated more than likely at 3ohms and at 1k hz
most subs for car use are 4 ohms.. (average) they are rated at 4 ohms but each note(higher or lower) will change the ohm rate (the electrical resistance)
some amps are rated at 2 ohm and some 1 ohm..
very few amps can run at 2 ohm load and if they can. not for long..
your explode is more than likely closer to 120w continous rms
into 4 ohms per channel..
that 1200 w rating is tested at 1k hz (midrange) and with test signal
not real music..
that amp will clip long before you get 1200 w out of it..
distorsion is the #1 speaker killer.. you can buy a 900.oo sub and if you run it in an amp that is overloaded and driven into distortion all the time it'll die..
with your amp, I'd buy 2 cheap subs (about 100.00 for the pair)
and run them.. anything more is gonna be a waste. as that amp will not keep up anyways..
if that amp can be run in bridged mode, (i doubt it) I'd do that..
you just have to wire the 2 subs so it doesn't run a 2 ohm load..

build the box, get some fair subs and see if it's enough for you..
your music is mostly computer generated and the bass is just there to be there, they are not all that picky about it.. see if you like it without spending much.. you can always change the drivers(subs)
and the amp..
just over build the box. screws and liquid nails lots of people use mdf board,

check with car toys and watch for there jbl 12s to go on sale if you listen to alot of rap youll like the 12s and there good price there 79.99 and just wait for them to go on sale for buy one get one free they have that sale all the time. ive had 2 sets now... I let one set go and liked them so much i bought another set.. and my buddy has a pair in his mustang and loves them.. o and its a good thing your building your own box..these subs dont require much space to work great but they wont fit in a standered truck box when I had them the first time I had them in standered truck boxes and the magnegts were to deep I had rings cut out that spaced it out 3/4 of a inch and that made them fit in there perfect and they hit hard with very little space good luck

It all depends on your ear for what "clean" is if you can do it for cheap.

Hard to say without knowing the details of it, but post up the channels, product number and such and it would be easier. Either way, the amp was free so it's worth a shot

I would go with 2 10" subs rated at what ever watts the Sony Xplod puts out at RMS. Any known name brand should give you what you are looking for.

Sealed is my preference. Easy to buld and no tuning required. If you plan to build the enclosure yourself (and probably your 1st time since you say you don't know anything about car audio), this is the only route I would go.

All advice is appreciated.
My only advise is to measure the area where the enclosure will go before buying anything to make sure you can build a box with enough air space for the speaker(s) you get.
