what to know about converting to 4x4 using 73+ running gear

i am converting my 71 swb frame to 4x4. what do i need to know to utilize the hardware off of a 73 or newer truck? obviously will have to install the mounting brackets to the frame. will the springs work? are the spring perches on the housings at the correct width or will they need to be removed and reinstalled? will i have an uneven stance front to rear? anything else?

Thanks,
David

The frames are different widths from what i understand so the spring mounts in the axle will have to be cut off and rewelded. I have read a couple threads on this in the 4X4 section since i have been on the board.

David, you can use these parts on yours, but you will have to modify parts to work. I'm sure the 4x4 engine crossmember will need modified to fit. You can install the radiator support brackets, and the shackle mounts as well. The 73 front axle should go right under it once you get the hangers, springs, and shackles installed. I converted my Longhorn to 4wd using hangers from a 72 K5, leaf springs for 73 up, and a 1992 Dodge Dana 60 front. Yes your front axle will be a little wider than your rear axle. But you can install a newer rear axle to get it closer. You will also want to put rear leaf spring hangers from a 4x4 on your 2wd frame to get it to sit level after the swap. Here is a link to my build. You can go there and see how I did mine.

I'm pretty sure the front is still a little wider than the rear in the 73 ups too. It's close, but stand behind your donor and look. I'm betting the front sticks out farther than the rear a little bit.
