Carrier Casting Numbers

Before I get too deep into this ring and pinion job I want to make sure that I have the right carrier. The numbers on the carrier are 326663N GM 71 C4. I'm puttin in 3:08 gears in the place of my 3:73. This will be my first rear end job, I've done just about everything else, so this is new to me. Years ago when I used to race a buddy and I would just slap in a 4:11 in my 62 Chevy and race. Howled like heck. I think we used rubber bands for O ring seals. We had fun and won a few.

The 3.73 gear is in a 4 series carrier and a 3.08 needs a 3 series carrier. I pretty sure the tallest R&P for a 4 series is a 3.42 Sean

Did the 3.73 gears come off of that carrier?

This carrier that I'm asking about was bought used...the one in my truck now is a series 4 with a 3:73 gear.

If I remember right, there should be a 3 digit number in the casting. 140=3 series and 174=4 series. Sean

Maybe I`m dreaming but on this site somebody had said that some of the aftermarket companies have 3.08 gears for the series 4 carrier....?

I think the ring gear would be too thin. I know they make thick, 4 series gears or you can buy a spacer to fit the 3 series carrier. The 3 series carriers are cheap and a dime a dozen at a wrecking yard. They used the same carrier up until 1981 in half ton vans and trucks. Sean
