Question about converting a single wheel to a dually

I have a freind that has a 79 chevy k20. he wants to convert it to a dually. What is needed to convert it. Does he need wheel spacers for the front? Will the rear wheels mount directly to the rear end without any spacers?

Re: Question about converting a single wheel to a dually

The only front spacers I've seen are on my '97 crewcab dually, but they look like they should work. The 2WD and older stuff all use different spindles rather than spacers. It might be easier to find a set of dually front spindles, they should be cheaper than some spacers.
The rearend of a SRW is a few inches narrower than the DRW, about 1 3/4" on each side, IIRC, so his inner tires will probably rub on the fenders. I've seen plenty of DRW setups for these trucks sell for $100 - $200 locally, that would be the route I'd take.

Try a Craiglist want-to-buy ad, might find everything in one spot for cheap if someone locally is parting one out.

Re: Question about converting a single wheel to a dually

If he has a K20, then does he have a dana 44 or did someone swap in a 60? They may be available, but I am not sure that I have ever seen a 44 that had the right hubs for a dually. I think that all 4x4 duallys were 1 tons?

Big Block is right about hubs, It usually is alot cheaper to go from SRW to DRW because the SRW hubs are in demand and not a ton of people want the dually hubs.
