3 on the tree - trouble shifting

As the winter weather gets here
it becomes harder and harder to get my truck into
1st or Reverse. Pulling back from 2nd and 3rd is impossible when it's cold enough (50degress or so). Probably wont even be albe to drive it to work in the am tomorrow.

If I'm able to get it into gear, and get to work, once I come out for lunch
and the weather has warmed up it seems to work fine.
Totallly dependent upon the temp outside
Oddly, running the truck until it heats up to running temp
does nothing if its cold as hell outside....

What can cause this...?

Re: 3 on the tree - trouble shifting

The grease in the column shift mechanism could be getting too stiff because of the low temperature. Try washing it out with solvent and re-lubing with something thinner.

Ok, I'll check it out.

Will this require a wheel puller?
Never taken the steering wheel off this truck..

Thanks guys!

Yes, you will need to get the turn signal switch out of the way so you can get to the shift mechanism.

Re: 3 on the tree - trouble shifting

I have taken the shift lever off & sprayed WD40 or equivalent in there & helped mine out alot.

Re: 3 on the tree - trouble shifting

I pulled it all apart,
and now cannot get it back together properly.
I assembled the turn signal mechanism
but I'm not sure what to do from there...

When I place it over the column
it doesn't seem like it sits right...
and when I put the wheel into place
the column threads don't stick out past the surface of the wheel

What am I doing wrong?
Is there a diagram somewhere that I can reference?
