tach guage
So i can't use a factory tach guage with HEI, right? Is there a aftermarket guage that fits the cluster that could be used? Or is it out of the question?

Re: tach guage
I'm pretty sure that you can use the stock tach on an HEI distributor. Just hook it up to the tach plug-in. There's a thread on here somewhere about it.

Re: tach guage
I have used them with HEI. No changes at all, just plugged it in.

Re: tach guage
This appears to be a sometimes issue, and may depend on the type of HEI. However, the tachs that don't work properly can be modified, so you don't need to throw away an otherwise good tach.

Re: tach guage
every once in a while someone hooks up a 40 year old tach to HEI and it doesn't work. However, by design, it'll work.

Re: tach guage
Ok guys its been almost a year since we touched on this subject here last. I installed a factory tach last summer. Only driven 300 miles. Tach worked great. Took cluster out to change temp guage and when I was done the tach didn't work. Was stuck at 2000 rpm. So I bought a new one from classic industries and replaced it. Realizing when I had replaced the temp guage I had bent the backing just a touch on the tqach and that was the problem! I installed the new tach anyways. Took the truck yesterday to a guy who tuned the truck real nice. Took my streetfire msd distributor and put it on a machine to set the advance and just really tuned it nice. Drove it 4 miles from his place with the tach working ok, and suddenly I smelled burning and here comes smoke from the cluster. Tach goes dead (along with my heart). Than a few min later it started working again. When at idle the needle jumps. So im sure something in the tach smoked. Could this guy have hooked his light wrong to the truck and smoked it for me? Other ideas?
