Ditto...
Jakeblues, Ah... but why would you think of selling that 327 unless it's only 2 bolt mains or worn out beyond inexpensively rebuilding?? I've seen folks get more hp and torque and rpms out of a 327 than most 350's, except the 4 bolt main 350-HD's and some LT engines,(unless you're looking for a larger selection of bolt on engine parts, like the 350's offer). ? Re: what will bolt up to a 4 spd??
to be honest, i didnt even crack the pan off. the P.O said the crank was unsavable though, and parts around me that are for sale are few and far between, and when you do find them, they are normally pretty pricey. and then after you add a crank, you need to figure the cost of journals, rods, pistons, a cam, blah, blah, blah. the way i figure it, if im going to fix the 327, im going to do it right the first time, and get another 25-30-35 years from it.

Re: what will bolt up to a 4 spd??
If you go to an '86 or newer (1pc main seal) you'll need a flywheel to go with it.

The hardest task is to figure out exactly what you want out of that engine, longevity/duarability, gas mileage, speed/high rpms, torque/low rpms, or a certain mix of all of the above. (Nearly anyone can doll the engine up to look like a two bit whore, but not everyone can make her screem with just one glass of hooch.) Then there comes the task of finding this parts for the 327 and making them fit just right. It took me near a year to research my 350HD engine,(w/4-bolt mains), find the right mill-guys, find the right parts, and put it all together just the way I wanted it,(and that was back when I was still in CA where there's lots more choices and selections almost just down the freeway). But it was well worth all the work, time and trouble. Few things feel as good to me as being glued to the back of the seat when I jump on the gas and I do still smile when the front end is pulled off the ground from a stand-still. (I guess I'll work more on that "gas-mileage-thing" when I finally find someone to cut me a good set of rear-end gears that'll actually fit into that damned full-float-R/E carrier in the back-side without changing the whole thing out! Maybe if I talk real nice to the "Zoom Gear" Folks). Michael Last edited by C. M. Wolf; 12-04-2010 at 02:09 PM. |

It has to be built with that intent in mind and the vehicle's gearing and transmission play a big part in how it actually performs, reguardless of "numbers". If you do the same things to the 350 as you do to the 327, the 350 will out-perform it. The 327 may build revs quicker initially, but that advantage will evaporate, and the 350 will come out on top. "Torque" comes from stoke length, but over-doing it hurts RPM potential, it's a trade-off, but niether of these engins is close enough to the extremes of that to matter. The "4-bolt main" and "350-HD" parts are completely irrelevant. 4-bolt mains have absolutely no bearing on performance....and I really don't know why this "mystic thing" just will not die. HD and LT are to vague to matter in this context.

Re: what will bolt up to a 4 spd??
The 305 V-6 will need a GMC bellhousing, but any of the 3rd gen inline sixes (194, 215, 230, 250, 292) will fit the V-8 bellhousing.

Re: what will bolt up to a 4 spd??
I would look at a crate 350 and get some good heads on it and see if you like that and if you want more power switch the cam out. The 350 i am looking at was a 4bolt main around 1600 the basic rebuild is around 2000 around here and thats a stock rebuild. Just a thought then at least the short block wouldnt need to be touched.

Re: what will bolt up to a 4 spd??
For the diff in the old 327 vs the 350.....I doubt that you will see much(more tork on the 350 in the bottom, but the 327 is a revver). If you really want Tork, build a 383, or a 406 crazyAl
