locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

My father bought a 1972 Chevy c10 truck new.He sold the truck in 1979 to purchase a van.He regretted selling the truck from day 1.At the time of my fathers death in 2008 he was still talking about finding the old truck and buying it back.I have heard of people using a vin number to locate a vehicle.I have the old vin#.Does anyone know how to locate a truck using the vin?I would like to locate it and if possiable build it in memory of him.

Thanks

A carfax report may show to whom/where last registered?

Re: locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

I have sooooo many memories of this old truck. That old truck is why I always wanted a 1972 Chevy truck.I can remember hearing the dual exhaust from a mile away headed to my grandmothers house to pick me up.Before seat belts were against the law I stood against my dad while he drove down the road. Dad would also let me change the gears.

One day in 1985 dad came home from work and asked me if I wanted a 72.I was like HECK YEA!!!!!!! I gave 1900.00 for a 72 c10 a/t a/c 350 engine.I still drive this truck on occasions and I still love it.

Re: locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

Finding an owner or finding previous owners, gets into privacy issues. Our government enacted laws to prevent us from finding what you want to know. There was a time when it was possible to find out where that cute girl lived if you had her license plate number. Thankfully, that isn't possible.

On the other hand, if you are in law enforcement, you know you have "options". You also know you have limits on what you can do with that info. My son-in-law is a police officer. When he was on his way home, an officer from his home town would run his plates, only to learn that he (the officer) couldn't get any info. That aggravated the hometown cop. It also aggravated my SIL. His sergeant had to call homeboy cops' sergeant and tell him to lay off. As an officer of the law, they have the option of deleting certain information from prying eyes.

But, I'm thinking you're not going to be able to find out who has it.

Re: locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

Just a thought, I was a once repo man here in the detroit area, and they can do a skip trace if you have any info on who the truck was sold to way back when. Or they may even be able to locate it based on the vin and the last time it was insured. Not too sure how stuff goes in SC vs Detroit but I bet they would be more help than the DaMnV.

Re: locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

anyone with access to dmv computers has the "ability" to run the vin and find the last registered owner... however having a position to be able to that it is not worth my job to take a risk of losing it to find out... **i am a 911 dispatcher**

This is public info and available to anyone just like your drivers license number and license plate number. If you know someone in your state who sells auto insurance they may be able to help you. You can also pay for a subscription to site a like publicdata.com and DCS information.

Just remember that over half the 67-72's have probably been scrapped by now.

Re: locating a previously owned truck using a vin number

Hope you can find it. I know how you feel- wish I had my Dad's K20 he sold in 93 but I'm sure its long gone as well. Was pretty rusty even then but I'd kill for it now. Maybe somewhere I can find the VIN and search also since I've got nothing to lose.
