Brought my '65 home last night

I always wanted an old truck but never knew where to start, so when my renter offered me his 65 in lieu of this month's rent, I said ok

The truck is pretty rough, to me anyway. I'm used to my shiny new truck
Armed with my floor jack and tool bag I went to get it yesterday and since I live an hour and a half away I figured I'd better do a couple things to it before I started the trip. It had a flat so I took the wheel down and got a used tire on it.
Next step was an oil change. I "drove" it over to the express lube. It barely chugged down the road and died at every stop and turn. It took five tries to get into the oil change bay... it just kept dying every time I put it in gear.
Finally got it the bay with the whole staff laughing at my NEW truck
They had to get the oil filter from the auto parts store. The oil came out like mud. They did a good job, lubed everything and I had em throw a can of engine restore in it. They asked if I wanted it washed, they do that for free, I said ok There was an inch of dirt everywhere and six inches of old leaves and crap in the bed. For forty one bucks I got the oil changed and now I could see out the windows too!
I stopped and got sparkplugs, dist cap, rotor, points and stuff. The plugs were just a glob of grease, you couldn't even see the electrodes. Changed em and the 283 fired up like it was new.
I started driving home and made it about 20 miles when it died. I opened the hood and saw gas everywhere, it was pouring out of the carb somewhere.
I'm not sure if the carburetor has a float bowl but just in case I took out a hammer and tapped where I thought one might be. Gas stopped dripping out, so I mopped up the pool of gas and she started back up.
Drove it the rest of the way home without a hitch, although the homeland security checkpoint guys wanted to know what was in that thing behind the seat... I said gas, they said really?, I said yup :p

Ya know it may be old and ugly but for not being run for years, this old truck really impressed me.

That is great man! That is why I love old chevys. Let 'em sit forever and they'll still fire right up!

Re: Brought my '65 home last night

For the sake of Common Sense, PLEASE go over you braking system! If the PO let the plugs and oil get that bad, only GOD knows when the brake and or Fliud Res. was last checked for being in good condition. Even if you need to rebuild, it under a $150.00 well worth the money.

Re: Brought my '65 home last night

Thanks guys!
I get a little compulsive about things and she'll shape up and be pretty in no time

That's a 283 V8 in there Bugeye
It's got a three speed automatic but my renter said it once had a three on the tree. I don't see evidence of a clutch pedal but the steering column has no gear indicator so I'm obliged to believe him.
At any rate it drives smooth as silk and shifts perfectly.

I've been looking all over the board and there's a ton of things I want to do, you guys gave me a big to do list

First thing is get some smaller tires, cut those springs and dig out the body hammers

thanks again!
