Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Hello everyone...I have been a member of the board for awhile now but have only been a lurker as my metal skills are not as accompolished as many of you on here. I picked up a 56 GMC big window that has had a mid 70's camaro front end mounted. I am just about to the point where I need to fab up the mounts for the radiator shroud and need some help...can anyone tell me the measurements from the front cab mount points on the frame to roughly where the radiator mount points should be? or any help in determining this would be great thanks. Yes I know build issues are usually worthless witout pics and I will post some this weekend..Thanks again Joe

Do you have a cab installed? How about if you do ..mount the fenders and go from there.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Factory assembly manual has the dims. I can post them here tomorrow. I think this was discussed before, I remember posting the dims before. A search might turn it up.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Thank you for all the suggestions, Orrie, I read the thread that you suggested and think I will do the following...I have a piece of sqaure bar that is wide enough to fit between the rails so I will place it at the distance mentioned clamp down the mount and hang a fender and see if it needs to move in more. Just needed a starting point..Thanks again...

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Sounds like a plan. Before you do the final fit make sure you mount the hood latch and hood to get the right relationship height wise with the fender and cab.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Be aware that your 56GMC radiator support won't mount nothing like a Chevy.
I am in the begining of Camaro clipping mine & noticed that they are very different. You should be able to notice that yours will need to be mounted on a crossbrace center/forward of the camaro swaybar.
Check out this link, it may help you.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

55 2nd-57 must be different than 58-59. I got a 58 gmc radiator support to replace my 59 Chevy and it mounted right up, only difference was the stamping pattern in some of the sheet metal bits. Frame, inner fender and fender mounting are the same. My build thread has a photo of it with my fan shroud mock up here .http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=144

Yes I think its just the 55-57 that have this unique rad support & mount. I'm in the process of reassembling my front fenders & rad support back on my truck before I cut the frame & re fab the camaro clip.
I want to be able to just remove & refit the complete front as one unit & not worry about trying to line up the whole lot in pieces.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

here's a couple more with close ups of the rad support.
If anything I got a chance to paint up all the under hood panels while it was apart!

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Red and Orrie,
Thanks for the info and the links along with the pics...after read the post and looking at the pics still a little confused as the shroud/mount I have is the chevy and all the matching parts are chevy..the hood is GMC and fenders who knows if they are chevy or gmc. I think best I can do at present is hang a fender, use the square bar and see if I can line it up. Then hold off on hood for now. Plan on posting pics on this thread and under a build thread this weekend..maybe with pics you guys could see something i don't...Sure is easy when you let someone else do the bodywork :-)

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

You NEED to have the hood in the equation. Do a search on all the hood alignment problems and you will see that the hood to cab and front support is the first thing you need to align, then the fenders to the hood and cab. Make sure the hinges are on. If you are going to hold off make sure you leave plenty of room for adjustment of the radiator support for your body guy.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Orrie,
Thanks for the reminder...looked up some issues with the alignment and need to take a step back..plenty to do before I get into that area. My apologies had meant to post pics this weekend but have been down with a cold all weekend. Thanks for all the good info.

Re: Radiator Shroud Mount ?

Understand cold, I have one myself. I am facing the same issue even with my stock frame. I raised the cab slightly to gain clearance at the trans and will need to adjust my radiator support too. I am hoping that I can just add the same amount of shims as the cab and get close!
