Front seal on transmission

Hey all,

I am just about ready to install a rebuilt engine in my "98 suburban. I have been told that before I do this I should replace the front seal on my transmission just behind the torque converter.

Any opinions on this? is this something that normally gets done when you pull an engine? The seal wasnt leakiing before.

THanks again for your help

Doug

Re: Front seal on transmission

It's really a craps shoot and depends on how many miles are on it, reasoning is since it is apart put a new seal in and it should last as long if not longer than the one in there now which may or may not start leaking. When you pull an engine you push the torque converter back towards the transmission which may damage the seal lip. I changed the flex plate on mine, didn't change the seal and it doesn't leak...if it starts leaking I will have to pull it all apart again.

Since it is apart you can change it for peace of mind, put a high quality seal in it.

Re: Front seal on transmission

Is this a pretty difficult job? Does the torque converter just slide off and then expose the seal?

Thanks for your replies

Re: Front seal on transmission

It just slides off and on. It's heavier than it looks so just be ready. When putting it on make sure you engage the torque converter into the pump, just pull out a little turn and push back in. If you have never done this before the converter push it all the way back to the trans before you pull it off so will know what it looks like when the converter is installed and engaged with the pump.

Re: Front seal on transmission

ZEKE is correct. BEFORE you pull the converter look closely to how far into the trans the converter is. If you do not get it all the way in after the front seal install, you can damage the front pump.
