Granny 4 PTO ?

Anyone using a PTO on the granny four speed to run anything like an air compressor or something besides a hydraulic pump?

I don't know much about it but I would try looking on some of the rockcrawling sites like pirate4x4. Those guys have figured out lots of mods for their rigs.

Re: PTO on a SM420 trans ?

My 67 has a PTO output coming off the transfer case. I also know of a guy who bought a 66 K10 that the former owner used to run a grain auger, this off the transfer case as well. Though not a sm420, there is a Chevy WWII GI 4x4 with pto coming off the transmission to run the front winch. The output looks similar to the sm420.

Re: PTO on a SM420 trans ?

I've installed PTO's for anything from hydraulic to vacuum pumps, is there a specific question you have? You can find most PTO applications at phtruck.com, they don't show the SM420 (old) but here is a pic of an old application book I have, do you know the rotation of the compressor? the PTO will spin clockwise so the compressor would have to have a counterclockwise rotation (looking at the input shaft) or you can use a geared adapter to change the rotation of the PTO.

Re: PTO on a SM420 trans ?

does the 420 pto turn fast enough to run a compressor? I thought they were a low RPM

Thats going to depend on the compressor being used (specs are needed and all components should be sized accordingly) The fastest PTO on application page CHV-1 is the 442XXBJX-*5 it is rated @140 lb ft torque and spins at 102% of engine speed.

Re: PTO on a SM420 trans ?

I don't really have any specific questions about it just running ideas through my head and thought i would see if anyone is doing anything with them. I used to work on firetrucks and we used the PTO to run hydraulic generators anywhere from 8K to 30k.
