need help with exhaust recirculator????

I have a 95 2 door tahoe, i had someone rebuild the motor for me and I have some questions, the motor was bored .40 i believe and 10-1 pistons, mild cam, vortec heads and high rise intake. the guy explained to me that i would be able to get more power out of the vortec heads rather than porting and polishing my old ones. when it was all said and done and he said i needed a tube to run from the shorty headers to the intake, im guessing to recirculate the exhaust gas, does anyone know anything about this, the shop that did my swap put a high temp hose on it and it just burns through after a little while and then it runs like crap, do i need that hose or can i just cap them off? it seems like there would be a stock tube for it since they are stock parts, I havent been able to find any information on it, any help would be greatly appreciated, this pic is the only one i have right now since im deployed, the high temp hose is the yellow one, also even when the hose doesnt have a hole in it the truck kinda runs like crap, will a performance chip help out? im trying to sell it so i dont really want to put a whole lot more into it, thanks, Jake

This is from gmpartsgiant and shows what looks to be a metal tube for the egr. don't know if the link will work so I included the filters used to find the part. might be able to do away with the egr if you don't have emissions testing

When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent. George Carlin

Did it always run bad or did it get worse after hoses burned up? Might be the EGR has junk in the passages from the failing hose and need to be cleaned.

Re: need help with exhaust recirculator????

I know I need to get it on a timing light cause last time it was adjusted it was done by listening to it until it sounded decent, ill check and make sure theres no burnt up rubber anywhere and i was wondering about the chip cause i wasnt sure if what was done to the motor is screwing up the computer ie; higher compression and different cam

Re: need help with exhaust recirculator????

Might want to look through this thread, not exactly the same set up as yours but might give you some ideas.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=418359

Don't know if throwing a chip at it will fix the problem completely and you will need to make sure they have enough info on what was done to the engine to program it correctly. I would question why the shop that did the swap didn't use a timing light. From what I have read TBI system can't handle big changes in cam, or airflow. Heated O2 sensor might be a good idea, also seems the IAC causes problems. Don't think blocking the EGR will make that much of a difference plus I think the ECM looks for a change in O2 when the valve is open.

Would probably be easier to troubleshoot when you get back as I would think it could become very expensive having a shop fix this.

Not much help but there other on the board that know alot more than I do, hopefully they will chime in.

Re: need help with exhaust recirculator????

Get the rubber hose off where the EGR tube goes before it starts a fire.

If you are running a stock chip it needs the EGR working.

If the cam is too radical it will need a custom chip. With a custom tune you can tune it so the EGR can be eliminated. EGR can be very beneficial.
