i have a lot of questions
i decided to make my truck a 4 speed i have already got the trans, bell housing, clutch pedal assmbly and linkage, shifter and linkage.
my question is how do you connect the clutch pedal linkage to the block on a 350? i also decided to add the front sway bar from cpp and it appears to bolt right where the front cross member bolts go thru the frame. do you have to cut the bolts for the sway bar mounts to fit? next problem...the trans cross member? is there one you can buy or is it best to just get one fabricated? last question what is the most affordable way to convert my rearend to a 5 lug set up? |

Re: i have a lot of questions
We will need a bit more information on what you have.
Does you truck have the stock crossmember that mounts at the rear of the engine? If the answer is yes then you will not need a transmission crossmember. What transmission do you have? |

Re: i have a lot of questions
These trucks originally used the forward mounting location for the clutch bellcrank. If your truck already has headers, they may present an obstacle
It is located just forward of the #7 spark plug. This is the only pic I had readily available. This one isn't drilled and tapped, but most are.

Re: i have a lot of questions
Stock wise, you had the cross member holding up the bell housing, as already mentioned by lakeroadster. Then the frame had a couple of tabs that the clutch arm bolts to and then crosses over to the block, where captainfab pointed out, where you screw in the stud with the pivot ball on it. This is a pic of mine before I tore it down. Not the best view, but I was taking a picture of the 3 speed column linkage.

Re: i have a lot of questions
I have had several sets of headers that it worked with. It slid through kind of tight, but worked ok and didn't touch, maybe yours could? I suppose it's possible that you wouldn't have to have the cross member. I can't think of anything that attached to it besides the bell housing, and if you had a tranny crossmember then support wise I would think your ok. As for the block not having a tapped hole, my first guess is you could drill and tap it, but I don't know for certain on that.

Re: i have a lot of questions
Yes it is possible to run a manual trans without the stock style bellhousing/mounts. The boss in the block can certainly be drilled and tapped, but it is a bit of a challenge with the engine in the truck. It would be easier with the left fender and inner fender romoved.

Re: i have a lot of questions
does your trans equipped with a rear mount. I believe that the later ones came with that feature. 64-66 did not
the later trans also had the enlarged frt brg retainer ron Last edited by padresag; 12-14-2010 at 03:05 AM. |

Re: i have a lot of questions
I don't remember off hand, but I believe the bosses are tapped 1/2-13, but I could be wrong. I would suggest getting a ballstud first and verify the thread size and pitch. Then you will know what size tap you need as well as the proper size drill
