Need rear differential advice

I have searched this board for the last 3 days looking for an answer. No luck. So I thought I would ask for some feedback. I want to swap a different rear end under my 1986 c10. I would like 3:42 gears(approximately), limited slip, and disc brakes. Here's the question. Is there a particular unit that would swap almost straight into my frame? Same width, I could move any spring mounts etc. ie Camaro, Impala, 2000 c1500, etc. 10 bolt or 12 bolt????

I dont know of any...
But you should be able to research your measurments against the measurements of the stock rears you mention by doing some google searches.

Re: Need rear differential advice

I am cheap. However, for the perfect fix/fit, I could probably do $700 for a budget.

With that kind of budget, I would think that the 88-98 C 10, rear some new perches and some "race car" brake parts would get you there. This however does require moderate fabrication and welding. Jay

Re: Need rear differential advice

Just last week I picked up a non-posi 3.42 rear end from a recycle yard for $100. It was from a '88 Suburban that had just come in to be stripped. A Powertrax locker is about $330 from Summit and it installs easily at home with no special tools required. And for disc brakes, there are several complete conversion kits available in the $350-$400 range, or you can just get a set of mounting brackets for the Eldorado calipers and source all the rest of the parts yourself.

Re: Need rear differential advice

Not to hyjack the thread....but, I was looking to do this same swap, minus the disc brakes. Is the 88-93 rear end the same width as the 73-87? Does anybody Know the exact wms to wms for these two rear ends. I'm sure this info would help out the the org. poster as well. Thanks.

Re: Need rear differential advice

My stock differential is 63.75" wms to wms. I found a 1990 Camaro unit with disc brakes. 3:42 gears, and positrac for $500. It is 64" wms to wms. Think I'm gonna jump on it.

That Camaro has a different wheel bolt pattern than your truck does.

Re: Need rear differential advice

Yes. I have access to a mill. I will redrill the fronts. So many more choices for wheels when you go to the car pattern.
