TH400 Slip Yoke

I am in the process of trying to finish my project. It is a 1967 Shortbed. I've had this truck for almost 2 years now and ended up having to put it on the backburner for a little while. I bought a 350/350 from a wrecked corvette and also had a 69 long bed donor truck that had a 305, 400 trans and dana 60 rear. Well we decided to put the 350 motor in and the 400 trans. of course the donor trucks driveshaft was too long(and please don't ask what happened to the original yoke) so I got a driveshaft but can't seem to find a slip yoke for this truck. It is a 32 spline with no threaded hole. I went to the local shop and picked one up but it was too thick to fit in. Any help with be appreciated!

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

Yes i know, have the 350 yoke sitting in my garage in a box of spare parts. The donor truck had the 400 trans in it, a two piece driveshaft and dana rear...it had the slipyoke for the tranny but unfortunately my "friend" who was helping with the build of the truck decided to keep it along with alot of my other parts for the truck.

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

in that case I am a bit confused. you picked up a th400 yoke and it didnt fit?
as far as I know there was two styles, either a slipyoke or a fixed u-joint on the back of the trans.
I am not aware of two styles of th400 slipyokes

That looks just like my 400. I am also thinking they sold you the incorrect slip yoke.

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

Hey guys, i think i might have a solution to the problem, see, i have a 69 longbed that came with a 350/400 combo and a 12 bolt rear end, and the 2 peice driveshaft, my carrier bearing went out and mees up all my u joints, when i was replacing them my slip yoke broke! So we ordered another off the internet thst fitmy ujoints(1310 series) and when i got it i went to install it and it didnt fit, i removed the seal and tried it then and i noticed that it bottoned out on the 4" tailhousing, i went back to my? Roken yoke and measured the ground hub(barrel) diameter with a digital caliper and then measured the new one and i noticed my old one came in at 1.688" and the new one came in at 1.885" hub diameter,. With a bit of reasearch i noticed that this combination was not widely used and not used for very long. Now im thinking about taking the new yoke to the machine shop to shave off .20" or returning it and spending more to get the right one.

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

Just an FYI..
68-70 truck T400's used a smaller outside diameter yoke so they had to use a thicker tailshaft bushing.
You are on the right track by having your current one shaved down to fit. Or find an early "truck specific" yoke.

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

There is also 3 different length tailshaft housings for the TH400 over its entire build period

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

The splines are the only thing that are the same. You can run either thickness yolk, you just have to get the correct seal.

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

Actually no becuase my extension housing holds the small shaft the big shaft bottomed out on the housing where the small shaft went inside the bushing in there, and the bigger seal will not fit in the housing either becuase i got one and it didnt fit,

Re: TH400 Slip Yoke

Okay then I'm not sure what you are talking about. I've never had these issues and TH400s are the only auto I have ever ran. Another day where I have learned something. The TH400 that is in my Camaro came out of a 68 longhorn with a BBC and TH400. I just got a car yolk and it slide right in. hmmm....
