What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

Does someone know the OEM tailgate letter paint scheme for a 1962 stepside?

I've seen trucks with only the letters painted. Are they always white?

I've seen some with the background painted. Is the background white and the letters body color?

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

If I were to guess, I'd say that the letters were white, or unpainted, depending on the trim level. I'm sure the gurus will chime in with the correct answer..

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

my best guess is all the colored trucks were white letters, and the white trucks , black letters.
still looking for a factory photo(s) or proof though...

I don't think anything else was painted, just the gate and letters.

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

I searched the web and my brochures too, but I cant find pictures. Its odd that they didn't show the 'working end' of their trucks.

Truck sat for 20 years. It was a farm truck, don't think it has had any thing done to it.

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

Here are a couple fleetside examples... I would guess that stepsides would have the same 'letter schemes'...

Your truck is way too cool! Mine is restored. I got mine after a long and fruitless search for an untouched original in very good shape.

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

The eBay truck looks like it has paint over-spray in the door jam, so its not conclusive evidence.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1962-...a3e7b5f8#v4-39

The silver paint on the 61 letters makes sense since the instrument panel is silver also. White letters on a 62 would then make sense since the instrument panel is white.

I saw a picture on the web that showed a trainload of trucks being delivered new. The view was from the back side of the trucks. Now I cant find the picture. ugh.

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

On 60-66 GMC the color is called Non-Smudge Aluminum. It was low reflective so the vehicle behind you would see it was GMC. I'm using the interior silver to redo mine, so I won't have to buy another pint of a different color.

Re: What is the tailgate letter paint scheme?

Awesome picture. This is America my friends.

The trucks look like they have wrap around windshields, but its tough to tell. Letters are painted black on white trucks, and white on other colors.

1961 uses silver letters. That makes the picture 1962 or 1963.

I think my question about the '62 paint scheme is answered. Green truck, white letters.

GMC 60-66 is silver.

Can someone verify the '60 Chevy is silver too?

How about 63-66...also white?
