Suburban gas tank swap
I am wanting to swap in a suburban gas tank to get rid of my existing 16 gal. tank, but my truck is a short bed. I know that there are 3 different sizes of these tanks but I cant find what the physical size difference is between them. Will a burban tank fit in a short bed?

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
It'll be from an 80-86 suburban since there's plenty of those years in the yeards around here. But If I have to use a tank from a 73-79 then I'll just order a repro.

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
I was looking on O Reilly auto parts website the other day at Suburban tanks for my project. They list the physical dimensions of the tanks.
25 gallon Tank Dimensions: 28-3/4 x 28-1/8 x 10-3/4 Inch 31 gallon Tank Dimensions: 28-3/4 x 28-1/8 x 12-3/4 Inch 40 gallon Tank Dimensions: 35 x 28-3/4 x 13-1/8 Inch Also, the prices are very decent versus mail order and paying shipping. It'd be nice to walk out of the local parts store with a tank instead of waiting for the UPS truck.

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
Well based on part numbers and dimensions the blazer tanks are the exact same as the suburban tanks in the 25 and 31 gallon.

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
I also noticed from parts stores that all of the tanks were the same(capacity & dimensions) from 73 to 86, but in 80 the part numbers changed as well as the prices. Is there something different between the 70's and 80's tanks that isn't obvious?

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
Yes, the gas filler tube spout is bigger on the new ones.

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
Interesting, of course online the parts stores use the same pic for all of the tanks so I couldn't notice. So the bigger fill tube spout would be better right? or does it interfere with something?

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
Bigger filler tube is better since it will fill easier without burping and the rubber hose is easier to get too. But, make sure you can figure out your filler tube size and if you'll need to adapt one size to another.

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
So I was out at the junkyard today and looked under numerous suburbans and now see how the tank has to be mounted. But is it possible to use the spare tire carrier crossmember as the front crossmember to mount the tank to?

Re: Suburban gas tank swap
I think the license plate would be too low since the filler neck has to stay above the top of the tank.
