454 question.
i am thinking about picking up my buddies 454 to build up for my drag truck i'm SLOWLY constructing, but the thing is its a two bolt. i know that with 400 sb thats the way to go, and with 350's 4 bolt is usually the way to go from what i've heard. so my question is would it be better to get the 454 and splay (spelling?) the caps or look around for a four bolt. i want to build it so that i can strap a blower on it later. when the power itch gets me. if i'm leaving out needed info let me know.

Re: 454 question.
IMHO stay with the 2 bolt with ARP bolts unless you're planning on more than
750 horsepower. I've never seen a big block that had any cap walking or pulled threads on a main cap.

Re: 454 question.
I agree, you really only need to worry about a 4-bolt big block above 600-750 hp.
is the blower for speed or show? if your building a blown big block for performance, your planning on making 1000+ hp and you should be thinking about an aftermarket block anyways

Re: 454 question.
2 bolt is actually in someways stronger than a 4 bolt due to the 4 bolt having studs into material that normally strengthens. Besides the highest stress point it where the oil pump is and unless you're into an after market block it'll be 2 bolt there any way.

my 454 is not a tall deck. I can not swear the caps are factory, but I think they are. it is common to get a 427 tall deck to build into a high performance motor, they allow for longer rods, they commonly can be overbored more, and they are all 4 bolts

Re: 454 question.
what would be the problem with building up this motor? he had it all checked out a few years ago said everyything is ready to go. just need to have it acid dipped to clean it up a little. its a bare block as it is so i'd be putting in all good new parts. would the difference in aftermarket to this i believe seventies block be that much? i'd like somewhere around a thousand hp. but if i cant get that without getting a brand new block i guess my power will have to wait.

Re: 454 question.
nothing would be really wrong with it, other than once the blower is on and your making a thousand horsepower, you will pretty much be at the limit of the block, and it could possibly fail from strength issues.
with an aftermarket block, not only is a thousand horsepower easily attainable with a blower, you could go well beyond a thousand hp and not have any block flex or anything.

Re: 454 question.
well i know the best plan is to get the end product first to save money but i dont have the money to buy and completely build an aftermarket block. so i'll have to build up this one and over time save up to get a better engine or if i break this one then i'll do it. i just really need to get the truck out. its only been a year and i'm already getting irritated.
