Speed warning pics for (into69z)

Here is a pic of one that I restored for (Harold) 71Super The face plate was worn and you could not see the grid. It has had a vinyl overlay installed on the face plate. These are a pain to install because the overlays are made for a regular speedometer and not a speed warning face that has the non removable white needle that is press fit onto the plate itself and also the speed warning has the recessed mounting holes. This requires a lot of massaging and a heat gun. I have some pics of some more that I did for (Randy) Byrd but cannot find them at the moment.

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

PT compared to mine those look NOS! Now I see what your talking about and if this picture will post you can see what I'm starting with and you can PM me for a more accurate idea of what I will need. I found this laying in the floor of a 68 custom camper and I can't believe someone broke into this dash to take out the tach!! Too bad they didn't take the speedminder and must have forgot the harness and the buzzer as well. I didn't. Thanks for looking and let me know,Steve ( I'm getting a feeling this will have to be done after Christmas, maybe not)

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

It is pretty rough. My concern would be first to check and see if it indeed works then with as much rust that it has is getting the needle off without breaking it. It will need a overlay and completely gone through.

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

I wonder if it's worth fixing? Wonder would it be worth just selling the speedminder for parts? You probably have a good idea since you (maybe) have seen worse! or is this the worst you've seen?

Into- Paul does extremely nice work. the photos he shows do not do the actual piece justice. If it can be fixed Paul is the one to do the work.

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

Please excuse my ignorance, what was the purpose of these speed warning devices? If you got over 55 or 65mph a buzzer would go off? I have never actually seen one. In fact never knew they existed until recently because of this board. BTW, very nice restoration!

If you decide to restore this s/w setup, I have an extra NOS needle adjustment cable available and also an envelope of real nos adjustment knobs (not like the generic copies found/sold on ebay as nos) . The cable is also still in the original AC box and it is a true truck piece as listed in the master C & K/10/20/30 series parts book, I only mention this to confirm that its not a chevy car or bop product s/w cable like some try to use. Drop me a message if you are interested and I can get you some pics. Mel

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

mcbassin- A speed minder or speed warning speedo is very simple-you set to the speed limit and when your truck gets to that speed, a buzzer goes off and alerts you that you exceeded your pre-set speed. I am no expert at all but I believe these were in 67-69 trucks, and in C-40 & C-50's trucks. They went away when cruise control was available. I am kinda an option freak and like to collect all the options that were available for these trucks-I don't know why???-but it's cool to find the odd. I sure someone else can chime in and correct me or fill in the things I missed-I hope they do because everything I have learned about these came from this board.

Thanks for the explaination. That's kinda what I figured they were for. I have never knowingly seen one. Seems like a pretty cool option. thanks

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

When I first started messing with these 20 yrs. or so ago I thought the same thing that they were in C-40's and up (dump trucks, stake body trucks). I found out on this site they were just as common if not more common in C-10's and C-20's than they were in the bigger trucks. Every time I would go to the junk yards I would look in the big trucks for them and found just a couple but have seen more in the C-10's and 20's.

Just to add, i have only seen one from a 69 vintage (all the others were 67-68) And i have never seen one in a c-40 or larger. And yes, 69 was the last year for this.

Not to hijack, but where do you get overlays for the gauge faces? And do they make the same for the lense? Thanks

Re: Speed warning pics for (into69z)

You can find them in white on ebay. The only ones in black that I have ever gotten were from Byrd (Randy) a board member. You can try him and if he does not have them I bet he can lead you in the right direction.

How did you go about this? I took apart one, but I am not sure how to get the spring rolled back up and tight. Trevor

If you are talking about the spring inside the needle, I did nothing with that. I took off the rusty face plate and put a good one on from another speedo.

how did you get the faceplate off without messing up the cable? It is hooked up to bottom extra piece to the needle. Trevor

The adjustment comes via a knob on the dash bezel that looks a lot like a valve stem on a wheel.
You can adjust when the buzzer goes off by twisting the knob on the dash bezel. Pretty sure it won't work under 30 or 40 mph.
The hole in the faceplate you see is the earlier style high beam indentation. The later style is round. Trevor

Trevor, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the cable, are you talking about the electrical wire for the buzzer? It is not an easy fix to replace the face plate, but once you remove the needle and take the 2 screws out you will see the factory brass rivet that holds the speedwarning needle, gear, and wire on, carefully bend the edges the brass rivet up until you able to remove the face plate. Like I said this is not easy to do! But if you successfully do that, install the new face plate and make sure that the gear on the bottom goes back in the exact same position! Good luck to who ever tries this. thanks Les
