Child Seats - Opinions

Are any of you using child seats in your Blazer back seat? What's your thoughts on them? How do they seem to work?

I'm looking at mine and thinking man the kid sure is up high in the truck. Questioning the safety in something like a roll over. I know it probably won't happen but I'm just thinking the worst. Has me thinking about selling the truck for something else. Am I over thinking this??

I don't think you're supposed to use any kind of a booster or child seat with lap belts.

Both seats I've had give instructions for using lap belts. I actually use the lap belts in my ext. cab pickup and the wife's Equinox. A good point you bring up though. My pickup belts retract and lock. The blazer only slides through the buckle. Is there more chance for them coming loose?

I use a rattchet strap and strap down the seat to the floor right infront of the back seat and center...did that with all 3 of my kids and works great! Oh I have two large Eye-bolts mounted to the floor that the strap hooks too.

I did extensive research on child seats in the Blazer.

I used child seats for both my kids without any issue. Child seats are generally higher than the child's head which should add some protection in the event of a roll over. If you are concerned about a roll over, I would add a family cage to your truck.

I do not use booster seats. Booster seats are designed to position the child for the shoulder belt. With lap belt only seats, it is safer for the child to sit directly on the seat than use a booster. I confirmed this with the Washington State DOT and the WA State Patrol.

They do make safety seats that have 5pt harness for children up to the age of 8. All of them require modifications to vehicles belts and/or add mounting points.

Bouncy did you use the factory seat belts? Any issue with the tension coming loose?

I probably have a one in a million chance for rolling mine since it's two wheel drive and lowered but you never know with the crazy driving people out there. I will sell it before I put a cage in it or modify the floor some how. It's too nice of an original truck to do that.

Guess I'm more concerned about the seat belts holding the child seats in well.

My three kids were buckled in the back, with the factory belts. One of them since he was 6 weeks old. Never had any problems. I think if you roll one of these early blazers, you are going to be F%@$#& no matter where you sit!

I use the booster seat bottom part only. The lap belts are loose on the boys without the booster. I would rather have them on a booster instead of flying out of the seats

I've had no problem with the factory belts holding the car seats in tight. I would put my knee into the seat and tighten up the buckle as much as possible and it never loosened.

The only obsticle with the car seat we had was when it was tightened in, the buckle sat right behind the thin seat cover and you could feel it poking out. Neither kid ever complained.

Thanks for the comments everyone. It makes me feel a little better. I guess I'm just going to have to try it and see. Also need to get my belts restored if I keep it.

Here in Ontario you can have a child seat mounted anywhere in the vehicle.
If it's in the front seat there can't be a air bag (or ability to shut it off).

Where ever it's mounted it HAS to be tethered.
