Same old question - Which 5 speed?

I've been exploring 5 speed options and read several threads about it, but am still undecided what I need to do.

So, today browsing CL I ran across these two trans.

1) An ax15 out of a '97 Jeep Wrangler. Newly rebuilt and never installed.$500 I know it requires an almost $300 adapter on the front side. What about using this trans in a 2wd set up?

2) An NV3500 out of an '89 GMC. 150,000 miles with new clutch kit and slave cylinder. $450

This would be going in a 2wd '68 SWB with a mild 350. Thoughts? Either one sound like a deal?

Thanks.

Re: Same old question - Which 5 speed?

I thought the Camaro T5 with the S10 tailhousing was the way to go?

Re: Same old question - Which 5 speed?

I've heard good and bad about the T5. The ax15 is supposed to be a stronger transmission. I'm also looking for something with a close to stock shifter placement.

I wouldn't use the jeep trans unless you had the adapter. It's pretty much the same trans as Toyotas with v6's

Take a look at these sites. The nv4500 is probably overkill for your usage but the NV 3550 should suffice.

Re: Same old question - Which 5 speed?

There are three different types of T-5s running around and another, no T5 S10 5 speed (it's a muncie derivative of some kind).

Anyway, the rundown:
S10 T-5s all have the shifter forward and have truck gears. Pretty tall first. These are non-world class and are WEAK.

Camaro T-5s fall into two groups. All have car oriented ratios (had one in an S10, was a lot of fun to drive)
Pre-'89, non-world class (weak).
'90-'92, world class. These are the good ones. Only a select few have a mechanical speedo drive.

Camaro shifter is pretty far back, might be able to snake it around a bench but it would be snug.

Also, the Camaro T-5 has the tranny mount at an angle, it's like 22* or something like that. I made a custom mount for my S-10 to stand it up straight.

From what I read on the write-up, you can use the World Class T5, with the S10 T5 tailhousing and a modified speedo gear placement. That way you get the World Class T5 strength, the better gearing, and a placement of the shifter that's very close to stock.

Re: Same old question - Which 5 speed?

The newest issues of Custom Classic Trucks has an article where they took a Camaro T5 and put the tail shaft off of the S10 T5 , this moves the shifter about 10 inches forward . That is what I'm planning on doing to mine . I had read somewhere that the Camaro T5 with S10 tail shaft puts the shifter about the same location as the stock 3 speed .

Except the stock location of a 3 speed was on the steering column.

What engine are you running?

You can get a 350 Camaro WC T5. I have a friend locally (he isn't on the board) who put an S10 T5 in his truck, but he is running a 250. The T5's are great little transmissions, and can cost way less than $500. Plus there are so many options that you can do to the T5 as far as the gears you want to put in it. I would recommend doing some more research on the different trans's you want to use and figure out which would be best for you and your application.

I'm going to be running an S10 T5 behind my 307 in my '51.

Forgot to mention that there is a T5 which was used for racing. I think it was put into fox body mousetangs. Those T5's have the same guts as any other T5. You could take put the racing guts and put the in any other T5 you want. the possibilities are endless.
