1987 R10 Interior Overhaul

Hey guys,

Been outa the game for a little bit, but with Winter setting in, it's time to get prepped for the interior redo on the lowrider.

I have a donor (I think). It's my 1986 GMC Jimmy. The dash and door panels are perfect. I'm wondering if they will transfer over the the '87 R10 or not?

The Jimmy being retired due to overwhelming rust under the cab and now getting outa control over the back wheels. Motor and tranny will be pulled and salvaged for another project.

Thoughts?

The interior will swap no problem. Not to hi jack your thread but, if you are parting the Jimmy, I am interested in the Aluminum tailgate band and the Sierra Classic dash emblem if it has one.

Someone with a little time and some skill could fix it pretty cheap. I have a welder but no space to work on it as I have two projects in my garage in addition to the 87 R10.

I may just put a for sale sign on it and see if I can turn it and use the cash to finish one of the projects or do the interior of the '87.

OK,

Seats and console are gonna be one area of concern.

I also have flawless bucket seats (even the correct color) and the console from the '86 Jimmy.

The '87 currently has a bench seat;

Has anyone ever done a swap like this on here?

Re: 1987 R10 Interior Overhaul

Ken, you will have a hurdle withthe seat mounting. The Blazer/Jimmy has a completely flat floor, where the truck has the humps to clear the fuel tanks. You will have to fab up some brackets for the console as well. You could probably get the brackets for the seats froma Suburban, but those use different seats also. The Sub brackets will need to be modified a little bit to be used, but it isn't all that bad.

Personally, I would have the bench recovered, and keep that. But that's just me.

Re: 1987 R10 Interior Overhaul

I would do that but it's very uncomfortable on any type of lengthy trip which is what I'm preparing the truck to be able to do.

I'll see if I can find some 90s surburban seats, console and brackets.

What years are best?

Lookie what came in the big brown truck today?

New Molded Carpet

Looking for burb seats too...

Almost had the 87lowrider sold this coming weekend but that fell through.

Still got it... getting the body work done on Monday. Need to keep it for EMS use. So, I'll have to find another source for seats. That's all I lack for the '87 now (plus detailing). Thinking about a wrap for it, not sure yet though.

I was looking for this pic earlier
also consider switching the seats if you have them that far apart
left for right and visa versa
changes the wear patterns

Re: 1987 R10 Interior Overhaul

OK, I found some time today to start working on the doors..

When I bought the truck in '07, the previous owner had started on the interior but not finished it. They carpeted the dash and headboard with the same black astro-turf looking carpet and painted the door panels, velour and carpet (yes carpet) black. The interior was originally red.

So, I'm going back with Red and Black. Here's a few pics of my progress today.

What I started with

... during the stripdown

After some Paint Thinner, Brake Clean and some massaging... (I'm considering ordering a black pocket instead of that red one).

Here's some additional shots showing the carpet and dash;

I have my work cut out for me to get this interior cleaned up, but if the rest turns out like the door above, it'll look pretty nice when I'm done.

Re: 1987 R10 Interior Overhaul

Instead of paint thiiner on the plastics use brake fluid. It washes off easliy with water, leaves no residue and won't harm the plastic.
