one ton rear?
Any idea what rear end would be in a 86 one ton with a BBC/4 speed? Im debating on swapping rear gears to go down the road alittle better. A gear swap Is cheaper then the transmission option. I was looking at going 5 speed until I priced the nv4500 with pto...OUCH! Here the truck is on the trailer after being stuck 45 miles from home from a stupid $5 switch.

That truck is a cab and chassis truck. It will have a 14 bolt rearend. Randy's Ring and Pinion carries 3.54 gear sets for them. Also good news is that the 14 bolts are far and away the easiest ones to setup gear sets in.

They do not make a 3.54 for a 14ff, closest made is 3.42s.

It will get used but I don't think it needs that much gear so I can at least drive 65 down the highway without the motor howling at me. I can lug around in 4 gear and cruise 30 mph with no problems. I just want a little more drivability with it. The most it will haul running the highway is my 4k skid steer and maybe 1000 lbs of dirt or rock. Most of the time it will be empty running back and forth from the job.

assuming it has 4.10 gears the only choice in between would be 3.73 I believe

Yea they go from 373 to 410. I think the 373 would be fine. I will try to look and see if my rear has a tag or something that says.

With 4.10's you'll be turning around 3k RPM at 65. If you were running 55 mph loaded with 4.10's you'd be around 2600 RPM, with 3.73 gears and the same speed would turn about 2400 RPM. If you're going to be working at all with it I wouldn't go any lower than 3.73.

It will be hard to ever justify the cost of gear swap, I bet you will never come out on top. Having said that my bb\400\3.73 is perfect with stock tire size, will still pull anything yet cruise down the highway.
Why dont you look in the glove box and see what gears you have, you could have 4.88s or something stupid, in that case I would swap them asap! |

If indeed it is a 14ff, you could go low as 3.23s factory. I've never seen them, only one 3.42 in a 2wd.
With a big block, I'd probly go with a 3.73. Still give you some grunt, but still be able to drive and not get passed by gramma....

I've heard of (but never seen) Dana 70's get put in some. Never a dana 60, though.

I would go with a 3.21 ratio. I had a 77 3/4 ton Camper Special with a 454/TH400 with 3.21 and it got great mileage (for a 454) and I wound still tow almost anything I could hook up to and if you've got a 4 peed then you will actually be able to use that granny low.

Like Tx Firefighter said, cab & chassis one tons had the 14 bolt, duallies had the Dana 70HD until '93 or '94, and after that they had the 14 bolt also. 4.10's were very common in one tons. My '90 R3500 single wheel one ton crew cab has the 3.42's with the 454 & TH400, and it pulls my 5th wheel camper with no problem. I have an '82 dually bed & rear end to make it a dually, but the rear end is the Dana 70HD with 4.10 gears. I really like my 3.42's, so I've been looking around for the later 14 bolt wide axle so I can keep my same gears & limited slip diff. I'll have to move the spring perches and shock brackets because the '93 up frames were wider, but it can be done.

Pretty sure its a 14 FF and the tag in the glove box says 4.10. I might just deal with it for a while. I am going to see what the tach says tomarrow when I drive it with the speedo fixed and see what rpm is what speed.

My truck has the 4.10 14 bolt with a TH400, 265/75R16 tires and it turns 3100-3200 at 65mph. Wish I had left the 3.73's in it. (put the 4.10's in before gas prices jumped a few years back). Still got the other rear...thinking about putting the 3.73's back in
