quadrajet vs. edelbrock
ok guys ive done some research via google and would like ur porfessional advise now
i recently changed my quadrajet out for a new 600 edelbrock, and i lost almost 8 mpg. everything im reading says the quadrajet should be more fuel efficent then the edelbrock due to the quad being spreadbore. so should i hunt down another quadrejet and junk the edelbrock? any of you guys have any advise eather way? |

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
I would say go back to the quadrajet because if you get it set up right it will be a very good setup

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
my stock 83 suburban with a CCC Quadrajet got 22 MPG average on one of my cross country driving trips. I was drafting Semi's a lot of the time, so that definitely helped, but I usually average 14 to 15 with normal highway cruising

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
Sorry to hijack the thread:
I have an edelbrock on my 460 BBC in my Burb, and have been considering swapping to a QJet....does anyone have any experience with the Summit Racing rebuild units, the universal ones set up for BB? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-210210/ Thanks, Tim

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
I have never dealt with a remaned q-jet, but I've read and heard a lot of bad things. Your best bet would be to rebuild it yourself. Get Cliff Ruggle's book and study it before starting. Really, they are not as complex or difficult to work on as everyone makes them out to be. A big problem with them is worn throttle shaft holes, but it really isn't that expensive to have new bushings installed ($8-$20).

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
Used Qjets should be pretty plentiful since a lot of people replace them. Try posting on Craigslist.
Check the sale section on this forum also, someone may have one for sale.

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
The simple answer is that Q-jets are great carbs; the spread bore, unique construction and huge flow capacity makes them one of the best street carbs of all time.
The downside is that they're typically in lousy shape, and there are very few rebuilders that can do them right. Tuning parts and expertise are also tough to come by. Your Edelbrock is fine - it just needs some tuning as it doesn't come tuned "out of the box". Last edited by Ticker; 01-12-2011 at 03:03 PM. |

Re: quadrajet vs. edelbrock
It took some work but I am getting better economy with an edelbrock. you just have to tune it down.

They are damn good carbs. Something was surely wrong with yours to lose 8mpg versus a quadrajet. I'm not saying they're better than a quadrajet, but yours had something else very wrong with it. I'll take every Edelbrock or Carter AFB I can get. They are the easiest carb around to overhaul and mine have always worked very well.
