Turbo'ed 6.2 Questions
I just picked up a Military 6.2L diesel from a guy. He also has the whole set up to put a turbo on it. I want to put a turbo on this engine, but I will wait a while as I want to get my truck running before I go about tearing the engine apart just yet.
What I was wondering is what do you have to do to the engine to turbo it besides the intake, exhaust manifolds, cross over, ect... I have heard that you do not want to run over 10 lbs of boost on the 6.2l. The guy said that the turbo is from a duramax and it is running more than 10 lbs, how do you keep the turbo from putting out to much psi? Sorry but when it comes to diesels and turbos I am a newb haha Thanks, Matt

10 psi is the golden line for a 6.2 any above is pushing your luck
the only thing else is turn up the fuel delivery on the fuel injection pump i woundt run the durascrap turbo i would get a Banks turbo charger or a old GM-3 unit from a 6.5 because they where made for these engine and will proberly be set at the right boost level any question how to install can proberly be awsnered here complete guide on how to install a banks turbo setup other then the hardware it should be the same http://assets.bankspower.com/manuals/656/96291.pdf

I think I would run around 8 PSI just to be on the safe side. So really all I need to do is put all of the turbo parts onto the engine turn the IP up some and it would be good to go?
As for not using the duramax turbo, the guy says you can change this part on it to change the amount of psi that it puts out. And I will be trading him a flat bed for all the stuff so I would just want to use what I have unless I can find a 6.5 turbo.

I hear its good to run a pyrometer on the exhaust so you dont melt down.
might be safest route to set the boost and proper IP settings. im a newb, so that should be taken into account I guess lol |

That is bad info, no pyro has broke off in the last 20 years, running the pyro in the exhaust is pointless and shows nothing. To raise or lower boost you simply turn the fuel up or down or use your foot to control how much fuel the motor gets.

YOU honestly have no idea what you're talking about...EGTs will burn up a turbo motor faster than anything...how do you keep tabs on EGTs? You guessed wrong...the answer is a pyrometer...

Stitch I hope that you do not mind me picking your brain when it comes to me putting this turbo on, you see to know your stuff. What do you think about using the duramax turbo? The guy told me it was a duramax turbo, but idk if it really is one or not. It might be off of a 6.5. But there is a small little "spring valve" on the side that he says is what changes the PSI.
The guy might be coming over Tuesday to look at my flat bed. If he likes it we will probably trade, and it will be a straight over trade. The guy knows exactly how he was going to hook it up to this engine and knows all of what he has, he told me the model of the turbo but I forgot what it was.

You guys couldn't even figure out that I was referring to running the pyro in the manifold or up pipe where it is supposed to be and not in the "exhaust".
Running it in the exhaust is pointless, there is a 400* difference pre-turbo vs post and way to many variables. Again no pyro has broken off and went through the turbo in the last 20 years. 6.2's hate life as is, adding a turbo makes it much worse, that motor really likes to melt pistons, got to keep it under 1250* at the manifold. You spelled it out just fine. You said that the pyro is useless which is bull****. You also said that you raise and lower the boost by turning the fuel up or down. That also is Totally wrong. You raise and lower the egts by turning the fuel up or down. You raise or lower boost by regulating the wastegate.

You really don't have a clue about a 6.2.
I have never seen a melted piston in a 6.2. If you had one that melted a piston it is because you ran your egt to 1250. That is only about 350 to much. Actually they like a turbo but you need to keep the boost at 10psi max and NOT run your egt to 1250. I have a 6.2 with 200k on it and i limit my boost at about 8psi and i do m y best to not let my egt get over 900. it has happened a couple times but i hand no problems. |
