reds available in 70-72

I was watching this truck http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT and noted that it sure looked orange in the interior, including headliner area. The SPID color is "medium red". Is it really more of an orange than red? What other reds were available in 70-72?

BTW, anyone on here get this nice truck?

Re: reds available in 70-72

Medium red is the only real red they had in 72. They had a hugger orange sometimes listed as red/orange but to me it is not a TRUE RED. That truck is like mine. If it is the original paint and was buffed out it would probably look like mine. Mine looks very close to a hugger orange after 38 years of sun. But if you look at the interior and headliner area you can see a little more of the original red.

To me even the medium red in fresh paint looks to orangeie to me. I wish the factory had a more red red like the reds of today.

Re: reds available in 70-72

That is a handy link but it lists more colors than were available on the pickups. For example, my '79 original literature shows 15 colors and there were over 20 on the site. For 72 it shows 2 oranges and 2 reds???

Nice truck Sameyrasmea! Thanks for the info

Re: reds available in 70-72

Medium Red is just red red. The exterior has faded and that gives the red some orange tint. The interior looks pretty red since interior paint tends to last.

On the '72 chart one red is GMC and the other is Chevy. The oranges are different. One is Hugger Orange/Red Orange and the other is Tangier Orange/Omaha Orange. What you'll find on the color charts, sometimes, are fleet colors or later in the year promos that weren't available when the lit came out. They are all factory-pac OEM colors. You won't find the color on my '92 in a brochure because it's a fleet paint. They are standard colors offered year after year, like the orange you see on Allied Moving Vans or Asplundt trucks. That's Omaha Orange/Tangiers Orange. You can see it's offered in both 72 and 79. Some years it wasn't offered in the brochures, but it still was available to fleet accounts or a dealer who wanted something different. I know a guy with an '01 Duramax Crew Cab in that orange.

Re: reds available in 70-72

Thanks specialk, that makes sense. Now, if I could just figure out which paint code goes with the description in the brochure, that would be good. For example, in '79 brochure (chev pickup) there were three blues, Hawaiian, Mariner, and Deep. The names on the PPG chart are different than this.

Re: reds available in 70-72

I know, names make it more confusing. Sometimes they used more than one name for the same color. I've seen Dark Green and Woodland Green used for the same color, etc. Just like Tangiers Orange and Omaha Orange. It's the code that matters. We don't always know the code (for sure) and color chips are not always accurate to actual paint colors.
