Antique Tags anyone?
Does anyone here have antique vanity tags on their truck? My neighbor has a very nice '68 Olds 442. It has the antique tags on it. For those who don't live in a state where they are available, here in Georgia, a vehicle over 20 years old can have a tag that reads "antique" on an emblem on the tag.
I kind of think that they are better suited for complete restorations, or originals that look good, not for those that are say....50 percent or so, like mine. I wouldn't feel right parading it around as an antique that does not look as it should. Anyone else? |

In Arkansas, it has to be 25 years old, and you must have another regularly licensed vehicle that you drive. If you only have one vehicle and it is 50 years old, you have to buy a regular tag.
Our antique tags cost $7.00, once. When you get it, you never have to renew it. They used to require a photo and it had to look "stock". Now, it isn't required. Good thing: I don't think lowered with aluminum wheels and primer is "stock". The tag that I thought was most misused, was the "Collector" tags that Florida issued. I only saw one vehicle with them that wasn't a rust bucket or a bonafide junker.

I have them on my 70'. My tags expired 4-30-70 as seen across the top. I have gotten alot of compliments on them. I used to restore them but it takes too long to do it right. Heres mine!

I have them on my 70 also. It's nice in Mississippi, as the price for tags is a one time fee of $25. As long as I own it no more fees.
Now I just have to get it back together so it can wear them.

I've got the antique tags,and would post a pic, but the flash turns the whole plate white. It is light blue with real light blue writing, and when regular light shines on it, it reverses the colors. I like it a whole lot more than the standard FL plate.
BTW palf70step, my spare tire looks exactly like yours. Interesting.

I'm not sure how other states are, but in Missouri, vehicles with historical/antique tags are only allowed to be driven a certain amount of miles a year. Also, those miles are supposed to be for car show use, and not daily driver use. I picked up an application for historical plates and they gave me a "log book" to keep track of miles driven. I'm not sure how (or if) they enforce this though.

slammed, my 35 chevy truck has historical plates on it and they never have checked for a log book, and its pretty easy to cheat on it anyway.

Yepperrrr. I also have antique plates. A one time fee and that's it for life. I think there are some restrictions but I never was good at reading the small print.

We have collector vehicle plates in Washington. It used to make sense to get them when it was a couple of hundred bucks to register the vehicle every year. Now its a $30 flat rate ao it doesnt really make sense any more . Theres a lot of restrictions . Ive had them before on a 450HP 70 cougar and I got a big hassle every time I got pulled over in it for speeding .

I don't have "antique" plates (In AZ, it has to be 25 years old to get "historic" plates, and 50 yrs to get "Antique"). I do qualify for historic, but there is also a provision for me to put an old AZ plate on it that originally would have gone on it when it was new. I.e. I could put a 1968 non-commercial plate on my '68 K-20 (which I did - it's actually a 1966 plate with a 1968 validation sticker). I also have 1972 non-commercial plates on my '72 K10 'burb (a 1969 plate with a '72 validation sticker). I think it's a lot cooler than historic vehicle plates - even though the historic vehicle plates are made of copper.

the law changed a few years ago about the use of the original year virginia plates... a lot of cops dont know this though and i have a copy of the new code in my truck...i run these plates on all my trucks...you register them as general transportation so you can drive it every day and keep the decals in the glovebox with registration...

In Michigan, you can run historical or same year as vehicle plates.
It is a pretty good deal. You cannot use vehicle as a driver or to haul stuff in. I have mine registered with a 71 Michigan plate. Jim |

I would like to get these for two reasons 1- cheaper, 2-cooler. I am having trouble finding vintage 1970 truck plates for Nebraska. Anyone have a suggestion or a set of them?? Later

i have a set of 1968 farm truck plates that was never issued out to bad i sold my 68 now have a 67

I've got the set of '73 plates that were on my truck...but since it's a '70, I can't use 'em these days.
Right now, my plates are starting to border on historic - I've still got the old white-on-red AZ plates. I'll be retiring those soon enough, though; my girlfriend put the copper Historic plates on her '73 GT (hmm, we could've put my old truck plates on it! Eh, the new ones look better) and she's decided she wants to get me vanity plates for my '70. Because they take up half the plate with "HISTORIC VEHICLE", though, I have to just get regular vanity plates...they'll say "GUDTIMS" or some other variant of the phrase "good times". If/when I get it into the 14's, that will be a double-meaning... It'll also mean I'll have another white-on-red AZ plate to put on the wall...along with the one from my dad's Porsche, the two (I have both!) green-on-copper '73 plates, the never-run second vanity plate for my girlfriend's truck, the CA plates for said truck, the new AZ plate for same truck again, the CA plate for her Opel...working on a collection.

everybody- when i first bought the plates i couldnt use them but emailed sen. Bill Bolling of VA and a few months later there was a provision for the use of the plates...you might try that in your own states if you cant already use them for everyday use...

yeah, technically they are but i have been pulled b/c the cops dont know its changed and tehy dont read all teh way through it...if you wanted to put them on you could make a tab to put the decals on so you wouldnt put them on the plate
