What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

I ended up buying the Pertronics Flame thrower Distributor and now I am not sure what coil I should run to get the maximum benefit and streetability. Here is the dizzy I went with.

http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/flame/dist/billet.aspx

Here is the first coil. It is a oil filled one and is 45,000 volts. It supposedly stays cooler because it is oil filled?

http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/fla..._volt_ft3.aspx

Here is the other one I was considering. It is epoxy filled and is 60,000 volts.

http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/fla...00hc_volt.aspx

It is going on a mildly (I say mild because I know some of you guys are making huge power numbers here) built 468 that is kindof a weekend toy. I wasn't sure which one I should go with on a street vehicle.

Re: What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

Does it not matter or is it that nobody knows?

I noticed that one of them has like a male plug and the other is a female. When I order spark plug wires and it says it comes with a coil wire, which end comes on the coil wire.

In other words. Which one of these would be pretty much plug and play with say a set of MSD wires?

I use MSD stuff but the 60,000volt style coil is a much better coil. I looked at there stuff a little but it doesn't really say what to use with that dist. You might want to give them a call.

Re: What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

How much compression are you making? Cylinder pressure / compression is resistance to spark energy jumping the gap at the plug. Hence you need more stored energy to force the spark to jump. Unless your trying to fire off 13:1 and a slow burning fuel like C-16 or alcohol, the size of the spark kernel really isn't going to amount to a hill of beans. You want the explosion to start at the plug, and travel across the piston top. You control how quick that all happens with fuel, and use the energy of the coil only to initiate the combustion process.

Just as important as the actual stored voltage is the 'soak time' required. Lower grade coils will require more 'soak time' to build that energy. Remember, the coil only fires FOUR cylinders every revolution. At 3000rpm your coil has to discharge, recharge and be ready to discharge again 200 times per second. Not a big deal for today's cheep coils making 20-25k volts. BUT,, need a high voltage spark to force it's way across the gap in a extreme cylinder pressure, and add 7000rpm's,, trying to light off some slow burning race fuel and you need something capable of developing, and discharging 60,000+ volts over 450 times a second. THAT takes a lot more energy, driving voltage through the negative side of the coil with a capacitive discharge, more heat, more... well more everything.

End result is you don't need that on the street to fire off a 2500rpm cruise, or 4000 or 5000rpm in a pump gas friendly, non CD box environment.

As far as which Pertronix coil to buy.. I don't know anything for fact, but I'm almost willing to bet that BOTH are made in the same Mexico plant as the MSD Blaster II series of junk.

And I'm willing to bet a Standard Ignition Products coil from you local NAPA store (probably made in Egypt or Taiwan,, who knows these days,, NOTHING is made in the US any more!) will do everything you ask of the motor on the street.

but that's just my 2¢

Re: What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

Why didn't you just put an HEI unit in, it is a one wire unit and self contained. I've used these for many years without any major problems. There is a ton of aftermarket compnets that will make them a really nice peice and if you brake down somewhere about every major and ma & pa parts store keeps parts for them in stock. I'm running a hei with Pertronix module and Flame Thrower coil on my 472 buick that I drive dailly that dyno'd 568 tq/530hp with no problems.

Re: What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

Since this isn't an HEI distributor how do I hook a tach to it? Someone told Me i need to hook the tach wire up to the negative terminal on the coil. Does that sound right?

Re: What Coil should I be running with this distributor?

That is exactly right. Tach goes to negative side of the coil.
