what? 3.07s!
well i went and picked up the 12 bolt today. got it home, put it on some stands and poped the cover to count teeth. and it has wimpy 3.07's i was so hoping that it would have 3.73's and i could swap it in anb burn some rubber. but now i'm just gonna clean it up and set it aside until i can afford to have it redone with lower gears and an eaton posi............sigh. man i really wanted to have it in there this week. oh well, i still think it was worth the price i paid for it.
any body have any idea how much it would cost to set it up with a posi and new gears and whatever else they do (rebuild kit???)

Are you having a traction problem now? Do you know for sure what gears you have in your current rearend? You need to figure out what condition the new rear is in and what needs to be replaced. Since you'll be getting new gears, I would replace all the bearings, which doesn't cost that much for the parts.

well i'm not having a traction problem now, 1 because i think my stall converter is actualy worse than a stock one, lol. and 2 i think i have either 2.73 or 3.08 gears.
i havne't pulled the cover on my 10 bolt so i'm not sure what it has in it. i really don't start to get in my power band till over 2000 rpm so its a dog of the line with the crappy converter and high gears. i think i jinxed myself. a couple of hours before i pulled the cover i was tellin my friend how sweet it would be if i pulled the cover and it had 3.42's and a posi. i think it actualy did have that but when i said it out loud the posi and 3.42's automatically disappeared and left crappy spider gears and 3.07's in their place. i should have just kept quite

Ryan went I went to Speedtek they quoted me $150 out of truck gear setting and $200 in truck setting the gears. I priced complete rebuild kit and setup shims etc. from Summit (not their brand) for $100. I'll grab the kit and when the time comes I'll get my 3.73 gears and gov-loc installed.

I would buy the ring and pinion kit so you get everything at once ($320). As for the posi, get an Eaton posi. The Eaton posi is fully rebuildable. Call randy's ring and pinion, he has the best prices and advice!
www.ring-pinion.com Spend the money on the professional set up cause if your rear starts to sing after 500 mi. you can take it back and make them eat the new gears.

I just rebuilt mine last year. Went from 4.10's to 3.08's <grin> (Nash 5 speed)
Got the gears and a master rebuild kit (ALL bearings, seals, shims...) from Randy's for it was around $150 for the gears, about $90 for the master. The Eaton posi was $480 and I had it set up for $100. If I remember correctly, It was around $800 for everything. Minus the axle shafts, the whole rearend on mine is new.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the rear axle (12 bolt) in my 84 K10. I bought my setup kit from 4wheelparts wholesalers for around $80. It includes shims, timken bearings and races, crush sleeve, pinion nut and gasket. I bought my gears (3.73) and detroit truetrac from Randy's Ring and Pinion. I have also bought the tools I need to set it up (20 ton press, bearing remover, dial indicator and base, and dial caliper) for less than what the cheapest local shop wanted to for setting one up (around$350). I have three to do so I figured I would learn.
Of interest, if your gears wear out, to some extent even if it is your fault, Randy's will replace them if you buy from them. Great company to deal with.

Hey I love my 4.10's, used to have 3.08 and would average around 15 mpg. Now it's around 16 mpg and still only runs around 2200 at 75mph. It's the best of both worlds, low end muscle and can still cruise with the best of them.

Yeh I did, went to 16". that's where the (now K20) comes in. But they are only about an inch taller than the 31 10.50's I had before. I'm really enjoying the change from 3.08 to 4.10, and with the massive ole horse I have under the hood, it really makes good use of them.
