Limp home mode

I am looking possibly at a 2000 blazer that has a few issues. It seems the truck is in limp home mode that restricts it to first and second gear. The only error code recorded is low voltage on the throttle position sensor which the guy is saying wouldn't cause that problem (are these expensive to replace?) . He's been told its likely to either be a fault on the MAF sensor circuit (is this common?) or a problem with the gearbox solenoid for third and fourth gear. Is this a common fault with the auto boxes? Could it just be a broken/loose wire or is it likely to mean a gearbox rebuild?

It would need to be pretty cheap for me to buy it with these issues, its done 112K miles

Re: Limp home mode

I didn't even know the older blazers like that even had a limp home mode? I'm guessing the third and fourth gear solenoids in the transmission are bad so it just can't shift into those gears not that its in limp home mode. I'm sure that throttle position sensor code could cause a lot of other problems as well.

Re: Limp home mode

OK thats off the list then. How unusal is a 2001 4 door 4x4 LS with a 5 speed manual transmission? I thought all 4 doors came with an automatic tranny? Reason I ask is I've got a line on one that looks to be in good shape with a full dealer service history, 68K miles and an LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas or basically Propane) conversion. (PG is half the price of petrol (gas) over here.

Also what am I missing spec wise with an LS over an LT?

Re: Limp home mode

I'm no expert on blazers but i've never even seen a blazer with a 5 speed only seen the 5 speed in the s10 trucks. My brother has a 99 s10 with the 5 speed and its great. I would go with that over the automatic.

Re: Limp home mode

I've had a bit of an email session with the owner of the second truck. It seems that he's the third owner, the first is listed as Vauxhall/GM so it looks like it may have either been a press car or more probably a demonstrator so that could explain the unusual spec of it being a four door manual. The wheels are original but I have to say all of the research I've done I've not seen anything like it. It does have a couple of small issues that you guys might be able to help with, the drivers seat adjustment (manual I think as its an LS) doesn't adjust much and the drivers electric window switch is a bit tempermental so I'm guessing it might need a new switch and the seat could be anything from a floor mat in the way to something jammed in the track etc but nothing that major.

Re: Limp home mode

Going to see the manual LS this weekend, 99% sure it'll be coming home with me as its a 1400 mile round trip to where its at! 2001 LS with a manual transmission, 3 owners the first one being GM, 66K miles, full service history, a huge file of receipts and bills, tow bar, in lovely condition, had both front hubs replaced two years ago, has a multipoint LPG (propane) conversion, so it will run on gas (petrol) or well, gas! It also has the optional Bose stereo system but cloth seats. I think the slightly odd spec may well be down to the fact that the first owner was GM so it may have been either a demonstrator or even a press car.

Heres a couple of pics.

Re: Limp home mode

At least it's the right color. Make sure you get the spare tire with the cover and brackets. It fits inside in the back on the driver's side.
As far as rare I've seen 2 four doors in Vancouver with a manual. I bought an 87 with 4 doors and a 5 speed new so I know they make them.
Happy Hunting!!!!

Thanks for the inspiration Lippyp. Bought the wife a new DD. Not red but it's dark green. She calls it Kermit.
