305 out of a 77 Monza
Worth building? Got it for free
 turns over fine, guy I got it from said the PO said it got hot quit runnin so they pulled it out of the car, lol if nothin else i got some decent valve covers out of the deal

A 305 is a 305 is a 305.
 There are a lot of 305 haters out there, and in all honesty, it does cost more to make the same amount of power from them versus a 350. But if you're going to leave it stock or even mildly hotted up, it's fine. I wouldn't hesitate if I got a 305 for free. Got one in the '87, drives just fine.

307 has a larger bore/shorter stroke (if I remember correct
 ) which means that it's in theory more willing to rev when built, and might perhaps respond better to performance parts.

The bore and stroke configuration make the displacement different.
305 = 3.736" x 3.48" 307 = 3.875" x 3.25" Conventional wisdom says that the greater stroke of the 305 would produce more torque at the same RPM......and the 307 would rev quicker and make more horsepower at higher RPM. I wouldn't count on a huge difference in either of them in basically stock form, neither breathes particularly well. The early V8 Monzas were 262s, though by '77 it should have been a 305. I would be sure of what you have before you spend any money on it.

I have a 307 in a 71 C-20 with 56k original, it sat for over 15 years. with fresh gas, new battery it started right up, uses no oil, does not smoke and you can't hardley hear it at idle ! Will never say anything bad about a 307

Small blocks from a Monza are somewhat different in some ways if I remember right from my Small block rebuilt book.
I'm thinking of the Oil filter mounting and perhaps engine mounts are machined odd compared to most small blocks. Something to be aware of.

Looking back at my book it's the Chevy II that has some strange things about it. I don't see the Monza as having a small block.

if you want build it, i have a 305 in my 86 monte carlo ss that has about 186,000+ on it runs great, uses no oil, and the only thing i have ever done to it was a intake gasket if it ever quits i will for sure rebuild it

The l69 motor in the 86 monte SS is a far cry from the normal 305. It has higher compression. larger cam[haha] and freer flowing heads with diferrent valve sizes compared to thier regular 305 brothers. I had one in a SS I bought new in 86 it would go for a 305. Could not make my friends belive that it was a stock 305 and most thougt I had slipped in a 350. Jim
