Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

I'd be curious to know too. All aftermarket I have seen are chrome, I got one out of a 64 truck years ago, it fits but is chrome too. Might be because the heat melted the black plastic knobs??

My 55 and 59 both had a chrome one. Looked just like all the knobs on the dash.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

The day they figure out how to post pics in this website server I'll post pics. I get tired of the missing links to photobucket.

Scroll down the picture number 6 I think it is.

I did a search on ebay and there are bunch with black knobs, just none that match the TF trucks style. I am installing mine (out of a 62 chevy truck) so I will have a power source for phone charge, gps, etc.

All original 59 truck but not sure about originality of the lighter. But it appears to be original. The handle is aluminum. It has USA 12v SANTAY stamped on lower element housing.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

Well after looking for a long time I finely scored. I got this off of ebay a few weeks ago. It works, but it doesn't always pop out and there's signs of melting of the black knob.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

I have never seen a black knob. All of the lighters I found in junk yards years ago were always chrome. I have one in my truck (all the other knobs are black). I think someone fabbed that black knob from another knob on the truck. All the black knobs are plastic, which will not take the heat. All chrome knobs are chrome plated steel, which will take the heat without adverse effects.

Just my .02 worth.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

Bringing a post back from the dead. I just purchased one off ebay as well with a black plastic knob as my truck simply has a hole where it should be. The element is stamped Made in the USA 72 Casco. I haven't been able to find any information suggesting they ever made black plastic knob cigarette lighters. For the standard cabs, what would be in its place? Does anyone have a completely original truck that could chime in with some info on if they existed or what would be there if there wasn't a lighter?

Since I posted this I found and bought an original with a black knob. Cigar lighters (as they were called in the FAM) were an option. I would assume that if the truck came with the standard black knobs the lighter would have the same. If it came with the chrome deluxe knobs, it was available in chrome and was probably part of the deluxe package. Current Repops are only available in chrome under the assumption that everyone wants chrome knobs (I prefer black in these trucks). Mine does not have any markings on it. I had to clean up the contacts but it powers up fine. Haven't checked and do not care about the element, I am going to just use it for power. Gator could be that your element was replaced in 72 or so. I also found that the one I pulled from the truck was actually a 59-60 Impala model that I sold on Ebay to fund my purchase.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

Orrie, thanks again for all your input. I ended up purchasing one from the same gentleman you did off of ebay. I wrote him an email inquiring about it and he seemed pretty honest. He says: 'From my personal experiance,My Father was in the Beer buisness and in 1955 bought 4 brand new 55 Chevy 2nd series Delivery truck. They all had cig lighters with the black knobs,As my dad and all our driver smoked back then.Back in 1969 or so I drove the last 55 delivery truck we had and it still had the Black Knob cig lighter in it.So I believe it to be original, unknowen if someone glued it back together or not,I did not think so and I did not. Also I have had about 6 or 7 of those lighters in the last couple of years. As for the element I may have put one on it because the other was broken or burned out.If you do not want please return and I will sell it to someone else. Please let me know what you want to do..........Tom'

Seems like a decent, honest guy. Guess this answers my question.

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

The '58 accessory installation manual shows one part number for an optional lighter to be ordered at the Chevy dealer, 987190. The 1966 truck parts manual calls out 3714970 knob w/ heating element to be used with Casco lighter 987190. The illustrations for the dealer installed accessory lighter show a knob which matches other dash knobs in shape and appearance, but doesn't indicate chrome or black. The attached image is for the 987190 knob and lighter.

Older parts manuals have this listing in addition to the number above:
55-57 B, C .......................... . KNOB, w/element (Roch.)............. 7026520

Unable to find a knob or image of a knob matching that part no.

Was the knob broken or just loose from the element? Curious...

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

Knob was secured, just looks superglued on. That's all. I don't even know why I was worried. I'm not building a 100 point perfect OEM resto. I want a driver. Thanks everyone for chiming in with info though!

Re: 55 59 cigarette lighter

I've pulled the lighter from the dash of my '56 GMC and it is chrome with a chrome bezel too. It's 'free' to first request. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow.
later
