Thinking of buying a project... Looking for input

Hi guys,

I'm looking at picking up a 1970 shortbox stepside GMC 4x4... He's had it for sale (not listed anywhere that I can find) for a while now, and last I saw he was asking $3000 OBO. I was thinking of offering him around $2500 for it. Doesn't look to terribly rusted, although it does need some bodywork on the front fenders, cab, and doors. The kick panels are both very solid, cab corners are solid, and it needs one of the two door sills replaced. Looking at the SPID, it looks like it was an original black shortbox, although it doesn't show anything for the engine / transmission combo. Currently has a 350 / 4speed setup. I loaded some pics I snapped into a photo gallery... Just looking for some input as to what people have seen comparable trucks for. I know they aren't really worth a ton fixed up, but I thought this might be a fun first build for me if I don't just buy a finished product. Thanks!

Re: Thinking of buying a project... Looking for input

Update:
Talked to the owner this evening. The truck is actually a 69. He says he'd take $2500 and is open to offers. Thinking I can probably get it for $2000 or so after talking to him... Engine is actually a recently built 383. Only rust aside from mild surface rust is under the passenger door. He's leaving the keys out for me to fire it up and give it a drive up the driveway tomorrow. Not sure if any of this actually changes anything in regards to a realistic value, but I'm thinking it would be a good buy at $2000... Thoughts, comments, etc?

i just picked up a 70 4x4 lwb with a 350/th400 decent shape has some suface rust in normal places but the interior is beautiful, all original and i paid 2500, so sounds like your getting a decent deal at 2000

Ya, the interior needs some work on this one, but nothing too major. It was an A/C truck, but doesn't have the A/C equipment in it. Forgot to ask if he had the parts or not. Needs a dash pad, and I'd want to get back to the original buckets seats at some point.

Re: Thinking of buying a project... Looking for input

What changed you price from the 2500 to the 2000 without a test drive. I would think depending on how recent the 383 is 2500 is still souding pretty good to me. I would make sure or try to that the 4 wheel drive stuff works as it should. That stuff can break a projects budget if you have one. You said it has a 4 speed I think it was 70 before you could get a auto in these trucks with 4wd. Jim

Mistype on the 4speed... I guess a manual would be a 3 speed? Regarding the price, he had a sign laying in the seat saying $3000 OBO. In talking to him, he said he'd take $2500 for sure, and if I thought that was high I could throw him an offer. I'm thinking $2000 - $2250 would get it done, or at least that was my impression...

im not into the bucket seats but if you could get all the original a/c equiptment that goes with it that would be a big bonus, the one i just got has all that still in it and it works, i have lots of extra a/c parts, if you need anything PM me

I like that truck. Its a decent deal even at $2500 with the 4WD. All the depreciation has already occurred, so it will never be worth less than what it is now. Its a cant miss, and we need to save more GMC's, especially 4x4's!

Ya, that's the conclusion I'm coming to as well. Now to try to find some pictures of shortbox stepside GMCs... Doesn't seem to be many of them posted, at least that I've found so far. Let alone black ones....

No, not many. Thats cuz the GMC buyers were looking to do work with them and usually went with the long fleet. Thats what I have and havent seen many shorties in person. Rare is always good...

Re: Thinking of buying a project... Looking for input

Just a quick update... Finally closed on our house this week, and with my tax return back, I went ahead and picked this one up. I did end up getting it for $2000. All of the 4x4 equipment is there, but I need to hook the front driveline back up. He said he's not sure that it will fit with the currently installed headers, so I may have to replace at least the passenger side to make space. The 383 seems VERY strong and appears to be dialed in pretty well, so I think I did fairly well even with the 4wd concerns. It definitely needs some work, but it'll make a good driver project for my son and I as he approaches driving age. I may have to fight the urge to move the 383 to my Impala though....

I say Buy it if your out let me know I'm on a plane with cash and road trip home.
It sounds like like you are sold on it just go pull the trigger? remember these are
Forty year old trucks they are not new or perfect but that whats cool is the enjoyment of restoring or fixing them up that is worth the $2000 GOOD LUCK

Good score! If no engine or tranny is listed on SPID, it would have originally came with the 250 six and 3spd manual.

It looks like the vin starts with a KE, so it would have been a 307 V-8 originally, "K" for 4 wheel drive, and "E" for a V-8. There would be an "S" for a six cylinder

Ya, I went out and picked it up this morning and drove it home. It definitely needs some work, but I think I made out pretty well... Pretty rare to find a good deal on what you actually are looking for within five minutes of the house. Especially out here in the desert where these trucks are few and far between to begin with!

Ya, for some reason I'm just a glutton for punishment on the black rigs. I'm actually going to work on this one with Connor so he has something to drive when he turns 16. So far he says he likes red, but who knows what he'll want by the time we are ready for paint. Probably stick with a stepside though just for something different.

Well, we have a little time yet... He'll be 14 in June. You wouldn't recognize him though. He's probably close to 6'2" now.
