Re: 400 sbc price

From what I hear, 30 over is maxxed out for a 400. If it's ready for a rebuild again, there may not be enough meat left on the bone.

Re: 400 sbc price

I would also be scared of a bored 400. I would want to have it sonic checked to see if it can be bored again.

Re: 400 sbc price

2-bolt 400's are stronger than 4-bolt blocks. The outer bolts cut through the weakest part of the main web. If it was run at .030, see if it'll clean up at .040 with a good hone job. If it has a ridge around the top of the bores, it probably won't clean up that way and is not a good candidate. Thin cylinder walls plus thin fire ring on head gaskets really restricts how much overbore you can get away with.
I've seen several 2-bolt main 400's at 500 - 550hp, but I sure wouldn't want to push it fartherr than that.

wrong. 2 bolt mains are stronger then the 4bolt 400s. but in that power range. you dont need splayed caps. go check out my thread i just built a 400 for my truck. getting me into the 13s in the 1/4. upwords in the 400hp range.

Re: 400 sbc price

but running it for a minute at a time... there's still cooling depending on how much you actually fill it.. it's more or less a drag only type of a mod.

Re: 400 sbc price

old gear head built my engine . Had some world class small blocks back in his day . The correct amount of concrete is essential (don't know what that is ) but I never overheat > run a 160 thermostat > most it gets is 180-190 when it's hot outside .

Re: 400 sbc price

I dont really know how much one would be worth but I do own one. I own a small block 400 bored .030 over. It is a torque monster!

If you want the block tell the person you are buying it from that you want to have it checked out.

If he is honest he should have no problem. Take it to the machine shop. Let them look it over. If it is good give him the cash. If not I doubt he will want it back unless he sells scrap metal...

Just my 2 cents... It has worked for me in the past! Good luck!

Re: 400 sbc price

Most that use hardblock just fill 'em to the water pump holes. They can actually run on the street when filled, the bottom part of the bore doesn't get nearly as hot as the top, so they make sure to leave the top of the block's cooling jackets open for coolant flow.
That said, I wouldn't mess with trying to run a filled 400 on the street, with no coolant flow between the tops of the cylinders, I'd bet it'll overheat and maybe crack.
