Sm 456
So Im sure there has been lots of talk about these transmissions on here but I dont know if its my browser or what but it wont let me search anything on the search functions. So my main question is how hard is it to rebuild one of these, where can I get a kit, and what can I expect. The trans now works pretty alright, dosent pop out of gear but when I changed the fluid last summer I pulled chunks of thin metal out of the drain plug which im thinking was the sincros.
the main reason for doing this is to replace the seals and basicly to go through it for my own peace of mind. Im also looking to do the exact same to my 205 transfer case so any info on that would be awsome aswell thank you in advance |

Re: Sm 456
Found this link some time last summer. It is the actual service manuals for the SM465 and the SM420.
http://www.kinzers.com/don/landcruiser/transmissions/ Kind of handy to have around for anyone with these transmissions. Worth keeping. Hope it helps. Good Luck! Mark

Re: Sm 456
I assume you mean SM 465. These are ornery to o-haul. You will need plenty of pullers & good snap ring pliers. You have to drop the counter gear down in the bottom of the case before you can pull the main drive gear. Like c-30 says get a good book. The early models had snap rings holding the 2nd & 3rd gears on the counter shaft. These are known to break & allow the 2 gear to slid back makeing a lot of racket in 3rd gear. The later models about mid 80's had a spacer that goes between them. It's a good idea to put this spacer in when you are rebuilding it. I have the part # if you need it when you get into it.
