Muncie 318 gear crunch in 2nd?

My '62 C-10 has a 3-speed Muncie 318.

When the trans is cold (about 50 degrees), shifting to 2nd gear crunches a bit. Not a lot of crunch, but you can sense the teeth catching some. When the trans warms up the problem is gone. I haven't driven the truck in summer yet.

I don't know if its ever been rebuilt...probably not. I don't know the miles on the trans (146K or 246K per the odometer). I don't know the type of gear oil in it, but its clean and filled correctly.

My first thought is a problem with the syncro, but other (non-Muncie 318) transmissions I've seen with worn syncros had opposite symptoms...the crunch problem got worse with higher temperatures.

Is this a typical problem with the Muncie 318, or is my trans just tired?

My 65 does the same. Just a little snick snick noise. Change your gear oil. Then you'll know the oil is good. I think they make an oil supplement too.
