headlights / parklights

I have installed a replacement wiring harness in my 51. The truck was not equipped with turn signals and only has one taillight. Is it normal for the parklights to go out when the headlights come on?? I've checked the wiring according to the 51 schematic and the guide from the harness and all seems good. Just not sure how the old system works.

Thanks. okie
