Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
I'll be replacing the head on my truck in a couple of days with another I'm having re-done. Does anyone have the torque specs for a 230 head? Any "hot tips"? It's pretty straight forward but I'm sure someone has some old secret they want to share.

Re: Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
Very important:
Make sure water pump is installed to reinforce the block. Front 2 near water pump only go 85 ft/lb, to not crack the water pump holes, the rest of the head bolts torque to 95. Torque in sequence, in 4 stages, gradually working up to final spec. Use thread sealant like ARP thread sealant. Use lube under bolt shoulder and washers. Sequence: Front-> 14. 10. 6. 2. 3. 7. 11 13. 9. 5. 1. 4. 8. 12 Good luck. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
So I've been reading up on the head gasket install and I'm understanding to use no (none, zero, zip, nada) gasket sealer what-so-ever, just what is mentioned above on the bolt threads.
I'm very mechanically inclined, I've just never changed a head gasket on a big engine before. I don't feel "challeneged" at all, just need to verify good info and technical info as well as welcome any tips from the folks that have alot of experience doing it.

Re: Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
One quick question though. I have 2 engines, a 230 and a 250. The head off the 250 is the one I'll be putting on. I was going through the push rods out of the 250 and 10 of them are "normal" looking push rods and 2 of them have like a round ball at the ends. I do know that the 250 head has been worked on before and the 2 odd push rods were more than likely put in by the last one doing it, but what engine are those out of?

Re: Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
Martin, the heads and valve train are the same on the 230/250. Yes, it sounds like someone substituted in 2 pushrods. Actually, "normal" for these is to have ball ends. Regardless, keep those 2 pushrods in the same holes, matched to the same lifters and rockers and just run it. Those are hydraulic lifters, read online how to adjust the lash preload if you don't know how.
Good luck, Tad USAF brat Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Installing a new head, need 230 cu in torque values
I got it all back together and running today, just need to take the intake and exhaust manifolds back off and replace the freeze plugs since it's now leaking coolant.
Just a couple observations I found between the 2 heads, the original 230 rockers are thicker and the temperature sending units are in different areas. The 230 sending unit is in the water neck and the 250 is in the left side of the head back between cylinders 1&2.
