Doing head gaskets
my mom has a 05 Avy with the 5.3L? (according to my step dad) but it's got anti freeze in the oil and he thinks it's the head gaskets or intake. How hard would it be to do? plus the timing assembly and water pump.
I have the tools and the know how to do such a job but never tackled one this new. I just want to help my mom save some Money as they want $2500++++ at the stealer ship. Thanks Dru

Re: Doing head gaskets
Get a Chilton/Haynes or better yet the service manuals for the truck and do some reading. I'd also check at independent garages (check references) and get additional input. You may have a serious issue or something relatively simple. Post what you find and decide to do.

Re: Doing head gaskets
Google 5.3 coolant oil or something similar before tearing it apart. It seems pretty common...

Re: Doing head gaskets
Does the radiator have an oil cooler. I've seen that on some of the pre 2000 trucks with the older 350s

Re: Doing head gaskets
I got an Alldata account for my rides, they have good pics and the instructions appear to be copies of the GM service manual. You can eliminate the intake, no coolant flows through them on the Gen III engines. Unhook the oil cooler and put a coolant system pressure tester on the radiator and see if water comes out of the oil line connections, this was the downfall on my 98.
